Damn the Beretta is a beautiful handgun. I've always loved it.

Lone Star, I loved reading your story about your son. Very nice.

Hurst, TX police department has them.

A friend of mine just retired from the Hurst PD. As a retirement gift from the dept, he received his Beretta 92FS engraved with his name. It was a total surprise at his retirement party. Pretty sweet gift, if you ask me. :D

I've been thinking about getting a 92, but cant decide if I want the Taurus version (cheaper) or to go ahead and drop the extra cash for the Beretta.

A large hardback history of Beretta

has a whole chapter on the US Government researching and finally choosing a new sidearm...the Beretta M9 or, of course the 92fs. Rigorous, repeated testing was done and it was decided that the amount of firepower via a large capacity magazine of 9mm was preferable over a smaller magazine of larger caliber ammunition. That was not the only factor but I am just trying to tell you that is one factor you can think about. I just bought a 92fs and it has two 15 round factory mags with it. That is a pretty quick 15 rounds to get off on a perp if necessary. I say your brother is well-armed.

the Taurus is about 80-100 dollars less at suggested retail price but maybe 50 dollars in the real world. the taurus has a lifetime warranty plus in my view the better, frame mounted safety. I've owned them for years and never had a problem

Thanks for the replies. I believe he'll do okay with it. Just wanted to show him that the guys at the store were a bit off. One clerk didn't even know how to decock the weapon. I didnt feel like jumping into the discussion. He ordered direct from CDNN for 419, no transfer fee from a friend of mine. It did have some blueing blemishes, but only if you look hard, plus 2 hicap mags. I advised him of 9mm limitations with the corbons and emphasized training and shot placement. From our plinking, they went thru plastic gallon of water and the 2x backboard everytime with dramatic effect, embedded into logs behind. I don't reckon they'll "blow" up on impact like a light bullet at high rifle speeds into the shoulder of a cape buffalo. We're both satisfied.

So I guess my brother ordered a beretta 92fs for his security work. I went with him to the local "police" store to buy gear. The guys there were all adamant that this weapon was obsolete in the law enforcement world.

If they say that of the 92, I wonder what they think of the 1911?

Considering that the 92FS offers all the same features as any other modern 9mm TDA pistol, you really can't get much more state of the art without going to caseless ammunition or some such. Polymer is not more modern, just an alternative. There is really no such thing as an obsolete cartridge firing gun, though a Colt SAA may not be the best weapon for a SWAT officer.

I honestly don't know why Beretta decided to replace the 92 series. IMO, they're committing market suicide by dropping their flagship models. It is one of the most recognizable firearms world-wide, right next to the AK and M-16.

Although the 92 is not my preferred sidearm, I do have experience with the 96d brigadier, as it was issued to me. I initially offered my brother my only weapon left, S&W Mountain Gun in 44 mag. After some practice, I , and he agreed, thought he was unable to control full house rounds and higher speed specials, plus the somewhat stiff trigger pull, and nevermind the reloads. My brother is not a gun nut like myself. I think he was drawn to the 92 because of his tour with the Marine Corps. As for those guys at the store, I try not to talk with them. I can understand selling what you got to sell, but jeez, they were saying some outrageous things. Nobody carries the 92 anymore..that's why they stopped making them (tho they did have new ones for about 100 more than my brother paid), Rugers will absolutely fail you ("we only sell what we trust"), and Taurus are sold at flea markets. They were pushing glocks, sigs, h/ks. They did have a decent selection of gear tho.
