Awhile back, a neighbor needed to raise some money for medical reasons. Asked for my help with selling several pistols. I bought two of them myself. One I wanted and was happy to buy. that is a Colt 1911 MK IV Series 70. The other I bought, just to help put some extra $$$ in his pocket. That was a Beretta 96A1 ( 40 S&W ). Not a big fan of the 40 S&W, but thought I'd just use it as "trade" material.
As it turns out, it's a pretty nice shooter. And I've read, a simple 9mm barrel swap converts it to 9mm. So even though the intention was to just flip it, I'm gonna keep it.

The 96A1 was my first firearm and does nightstand duty. Carries a TLR4 too. It's not going anyplace.

I own four different versions of the Beretta 92 series guns plus I love .40 S&W. I have always wanted a 96a1, but never found a good deal on a non DAO gun.

You helped a neighbor when he needed it so good on you!

Both are nice additions. Cool to hear you can convert the 96A1. Sounds like a win the whole way around.

I almost gave up on the .40 after having shot it in a SIG 229 and a Glock 22...not very accurate...but then I took in a Beretta 96 as partial payment on a car.

The Beretta was the most accurate .40 I've ever shot and caused me not to give up on the .40. It was very smooth in operation and much nicer to shoot after I had Ernest Langdon work the trigger over

And I've read, a simple 9mm barrel swap converts it to 9mm.
Yes, it really is that simple...it doesn't work in reverse. You can even load the 96A1 magazines with 9mm cartridges, but it will only hold 12-13

I like the 96 and was shooting my 96D Vertec yesterday to compare to my 92. It is a gun I would bet my life on and did for about 9 years.

If you shoot the 180 grain ammo, the gun will hold up fine. My agency used to issue the 96D Brigadier and we used a hot 155 grain load. All of the guns we had were worn out after just 10 years. Our load was a 155 grain jhp at almost 1200 fps. It worked great in the field with no complaints ever that I heard, but it is HARD on the guns.

Now I stick with the 180 ball for practice and carry 180 grain FEDERAL HST for defense. Also, I have a light and think it is a great idea, but still keep a flashlight nearby. It is amazing how often gun mounted lights get turned on unintentionally and are dead when you MIGHT NEED THEM!

I've been looking for one a 96 model for a long time now. I have a lot of .40 guns and I like Berettas. They aren't easy to come by though around here
