I do have one similar to that picture on my 96. Mine is about half as long, with only 2 vents on top instead of the three pictured. It also doesn't have what appears to be a shroud on what would be the area in front of the guide rod. It looks great on the firearm, and perfoms very well compared to my friends 96 without one. Very noticeable difference.
Unfortunately, it was already installed when I picked up the firearm years ago at my GS on consignment. Even more unfortunately my old GS owner/gunsmith is no longer with us, so I can't get information from him about it. This was years ago, but even then it was still my best found deal ever.
Back then, my smith ordered it for someone who wanted to shoot competitvely with it. Did a full trigger job, said he put the compensator in place, upgraded the sights and put Hogue one piece grips on. The owner shot a box of 50 through it, was unhappy and consigned it for $475.
Quick field strip.....Far as I can tell, it's a one piece barrel/compensator, which doesn't make sense to me. I never have been able to remove the barrel from the slide for cleaning....it had to go in at one point. Only markings I found, were a PB on the left side of the first support lug. Rear of the barrel directly on top is CAL. .40 painted white. Front of barrel, 3 o'clock there is a stamp (looks like inspector mark maybe?) that matches the stamp on the frame, right front side of trigger guard. That would mean factory barrel correct? hmmmmm
Times like this sure make me wish I had a digi camera. :banghead: Someone on this great forum I bet knows for sure what I have. Probably 2 more guns then I'll "waste" money on that camera.
