Beretta Tomcat "fires" with saftey on?!?

While inspecting and dryfiring my Tomcat today, i found out that it "fires" with the saftey engaged!
It does take a little bit more force than normal to do this, but does it none the less.
To be sure the hammer was actually hitting the firing pin I tilted the barrel and placed my finger on the breach face and pulled the trigger, sure enough, the firing pin hit my finger!
This can't be normal can it?
I don't think it's a huge deal, but i should send it back to Beretta, right?

uh, yeah, send it back.
I'm anal-retentive about weapons safety, probably a result of being on the recieving end of more than one friendly fire instance. A weapon without a working safety is not safe.
big deal? your call, but I'd get it fixed ASAP if I were you.

I am not a gunsmith & have never heard of this problem. I am aware of early Tomcats suffering cracked frames & other reliability issues. I stopped carrying it years ago, finally sold it & bought an LCP for the wife's purse.

I don't mean to downplay a defective saftey at all. After re-reading my post it does sound that way, sorry.
I just meant that, A-I have other carry guns to carry while it's gone & B-it stays in a holster that covers the trigger when it's carried, so it would be alot like a DAO pistol w/o a saftey, not like a cocked and locked 1911 with a defective/broken saftey.

some double actions are designed to be carried without a safety present, such as a sig 226, a glock does not have a safety either. But these systems were designed to be able to be carried safely without a manual safety. I dont know about the beretta, it might be fine, however, it might not.
I'd rather you didnt find out what a gunshot wound feels like, (it doesnt feel pleseant)
your probably right, and it might be safe, but I wouldnt if I were you.

The tomcat has a positive click when the saftey is engaged. Sure you're pushing it down all the way? If you are, then by all means, it should go in.

While the safety certainly should be operational, do you really carry that gun withthe safety on? They have about a 12 pound trigger pull, and you needn't retract the slide (cock the hammer) to chamber a round anyway.

As for a cracked frame causing the problem, I can't see how. They crack above the trigger gaurd, no where near the hammer/sear/safety.

Based on my nightmare experiences with the Tomcat 9and with Beretta's custsomer service department), I'd say, dryly, that you are fortunate that the thing fired at all. God knows that mine didn't, regardless of the safety's position.

What happens to the slide when you fire it with the safety on? Just curious because I have noticed on mine that the slide cannot be worked with the safety engaged. If you look at the picture below you will notice the safety lever "fits" into the slide which prevents it from moving. Can't say much else than that because mine has never been shot. Also, if you do some reading I think you may find that the safety can be broken by pulling he trigger really hard. I like the gun, but I hear lots of bad things about them. I have been manually working the slide to loosen mine up. Also put some grease on the slide..... I'm fully expecting the frame to crack. Seems thats what they all do for the most part.
