I have a Bersa .380 which I really like. I am looking at a Walther PPK/s by S&W and think I'd like to buy one. What a gorgeous gun! But its not just to look at, its for shooting.

My concern is the recoil. I had a Makarov for a while and sold it due to the hand stinging recoil, my Bersa does not do that. The salesman said he thinks the Walther recoil should be less than the Bersa because its all steel and heavier.

Anyone have any experience with the two? I'd like some opinions, I don't want to make a $500 mistake.

This is just an opinion of course, and not based on any kind of facts.....I rented a PPK (don't know the exact year/make) and did NOT like the way it felt in my hand as far as the recoil. It also had some kind of FTE problem; about every 3 rounds it would jam. Probably not inherently problematic....you know how the rental guns can get abused.

Anyway, I rented a BERSA at a different range and really liked it. I wouldn't say the recoil is hard, but it has a fair amount of "snap" to it. After about 100 rounds, I need to take a 2 or 3 minute break, or switch to a different gun for a few rounds. So I bought the BERSA.

I have really big hands, and it still seems to fit pretty well. And it's ALMOST as sexy as a PPK....hahaha

The Beretta 380 fealt REALLY nice, and so did the CZ-83.

I'm not sure I would spend $500 for another .380 unless I was REALLY into the gun or wanted it for a collection.

Can't comment on the PPK/S, but I've got one of the Bersa's, and also, really like it. :) One thing you should keep in mind about the PPK/S is the DA trigger...have you tried it? I can't comment on the recoil either, as I only had money for 1 box of ammo.

Have you considered the Sig 232? It's a gorgeous gun too, and .380 ACP. I plan to get one, just not sure if it'll be before or after a P99.

I have a German Walther PPK/S, a Bersa .380 and a Russian Makarov in 9x18.

I don't find any of them unpleasant to shoot. Certainly not hand stinging. The Walther has a very heavy DA trigger pull, the Bersa's pull is much lighter and very smooth. The Makarov's is somewhere in between the two.

I can't comment on the quality of the new S&W made PPKs, but the German PPK I have is beautiful, finely crafted, accurate and reliable.

If you've found this type of gun unpleasant to shoot in the past, you should definately shoot one before you buy. Maybe a THR member in your area has one you could try??

I just got a new German PPK/S. I can't wait to try it out. I might even get a 7.65 PPK if this one is as good as I hope it is. PPK or PPK/S are perfect summer carry guns. Hard to beat the P-99 though.
