Bessie got skunked this season...Dang it!!!

The old Brown Bess Ranger Carbine does okay at 30 yards, I don't aim for the head, but rather where the neck joins the body. Anyhow, didn't get a shot all season. Probably only heard two gobbles. But I hunted hard, and carried Bess many a mile. Yesterday, last day of season, I was totally beat by the time I got home. Hunted all day long.

This pattern was more dense to the left, interesting.

So, I popped her off today to empty the load she's been packing all season. Somewhere around two ounces of #4 with some smaller shot mixed in, over 100 grains of 1fg. Sometimes I pull it, but it's good to shoot a pattern on the paper, just to check and make sure she's behaving.

Now I can do some shooting with ball at 50 yards, and take her up in the mountains once in a while to hike, trek, and explore. I have lighter long-guns for that, but nothing that throws a .690" ball over 140 grains of Swiss. That makes me feel warm and fuzzy and comfy in Grizz country. And at 8.5 pounds she's not exactly a boat anchor, I've never even had a sling on her.

Thank you. The rear sight is just too functional to go without, and there is an original Brown Bess in the NRA collection with a period-added rear sight, so it does not hurt my feelings when I hear that it's not "correct".
