Best .177 pellet for killing

They're ok if your airgun shoots them accurately.

Even very powerful airguns are seriously anemic when compared to firearms. They poke little tiny holes, and if the holes aren't in exactly the right place, it doesn't matter what kind of pellet you use.

The Crow Magnums are good, most wadcutters are good, and the accurate range of both the wadcutters and the CMs tend to be the same. Domed pellets (round-headed) aren't quite as accurate as wadcutters (in general) but tend to be more accurate than any of the hollowpoints and also tend to be more accurate than either at longer ranges.

Air gun pellets come in three common sizes:

.177

.20

.22

The .20 is the best of the three. Get yourself a Benjamin Sheridan Blue Streak in .20 and at high pump - 700 fps - you will easily kill a racoon sized varmint within 50 yards given a head shot.

I used to shoot rabbits with Beeman pointed tip pellets. Never had one run away! I am not sure of the commercial name for the pellets but if they carry beeman they will probably have the pointed tip pellets.

Good luck doing any killing work with the .177. You certainly need to maximize your rifle to get that work done right. (I've always been very impressed with the .22s for this job.)

I would recommend getting accurate as possible, with a penetrating pellet design. To determine which pellet would fill the bill best I suggest going to this site...

Get that .177 pellet sampler and do some serious accuracy testing. Test the most likely candidates for penetration and "smack" on your intended target.

Good luck! :)

The Beaman pointed ones work very well at 950 fps! Mine are designated ''Silver Jet Magnum and IIRC are about a grain or more heavier than some others. At 25 yards grouping is well adequate - only downside might be over penetration - and actually wad cutter type pellets like some RWS (std weight) I used to use - do seem to do more damage and penetrate less, whilst also being very effective for target accuracy.
