I've a 1x8 24" barreled upper on order and want to start looking for ammo. I've read that 62-80gr is the preferred bullet weight range, but where is the happy medium?

Would you choose 68 or 75gr ammo?

Also, how will 55gr surplus ammo group?

Thanks,
Andras

PS- looked around arfcom, couldn't easily find what I needed.

It will probably do just fine from 55 grains up to the 68 and 69 grainers. It might group just fine with the 75 and 79 grainners too, but you'll have to shoot it to find out. A lot of people recommend 1:7 above 70 grains.

You don't mention what your intended use is. My comments below relate to high power rifle competition.

The 1:7 twist was adopted by DoD because of the need to stabilize the long L110 tracer round out to 800 yards. A 1:8 twist will have no problems with either the 80 grain Matchking or some (all?) of the very low drag 80 grainers. You get your greatest return with those bullets at 500 yards and beyond, loaded long for maximum velocity (single loading for slow fire).

The favored bullets for short range (200-300 yards) are the 75 and 77 grain bullets, loaded to magazine length for rapid fire events. The 1:8 twist will handle them with no problem. I have a Colt with a 1:9 twist that does OK with the 75/77s, but others don't.

The 68-69 grain match bullets should all work fine with a 1:8 twist.

Lighter than that I don't shoot, such as the varmint bullets (50-63 grain). Theoretically the 1:8 is too fast for the lighter bullets and they'll take a hundred yards or more to "settle down." But I know guys using 1:8 match rifles who shoot the V-max bullets and are very pleased with the results.

To some degree, each rifle has it's own preferred bullets and loads.

I've fired everything from 45gr to 75gr out of my 1:8 and haven't found anything it doesn't like so far. The differences between match grade ammo of different weight is so small that it is beyond my ability to notice it.

Sierra 52 and 69s

Both of these bullets shoot very well from my either 1:8 or 1:9 barrels. I am sub MOA with either . You can buy the equivalent from Black Hills as a relaod in their Blue Box line. If any relaoders are interested, 25.2 Varget under the 69 and 25.5 Benchmark under the 52.

Whats your barrel lenght? If it's 26in, it could blow up 55's. Not likely but maybe. Id go with either you mentioned.

I usually get 1.6, 1.5 MOA from my 1/7 20" using Federal XM193. It also groups about as well with PMC 50gr Blitzking poly tipped HPs.

Get a bunch of ammo and see what your likes. I was surprised by the PMCs working so well. BSW
