I prefer mini mags for any .22 used for self defense. The only thing you have going for you is penetration with a .22. A solid copper coat bullet penetrates best in any caliber.
According to these guys (NOT necessarily the definitive word on the subject, just another data point), the sss performs worse than other round nose bullets.
Looks like the yellow jacket ends up somewhere between wadcutter and semiwadcutter in shape when it doesn't have the velocity to fully expand.
Ton of expansion from the stinger, just poor penetration as a tradeoff.
I agree with other posters, the CCI small game bullet (SGB) seem to be a good compromise. Non expanding, heavyish solid with truncated cone shape. The mini-mag, for me, is number two.
Tried the SSS 60 grainers and they fed, cycled and fired well from my Ruger 5.5 inch markII. They would key-hole at ~ 10 yards so I think penetration would be an issue. Ranges closer than 10 yards they were more stable.
I was referring to the penetration. No idea why theirs is so bad, maybe it was way less unstable out of their Taurus than brassfetcher's example. Again it's just another data point of many, but interesting results.
