Best 3" revolvers?

My daughter just bought a used M10-5 3" SB at a gun show today with Century Arms markings on it. Not sure of the exact origins, but it was very smooth DA and SA, and showed only a moderate amount of carry wear; mechanically very, very good. The interesting part is that it has a *slim, pencil 3" barrel*. Good looking and has a lively feel to it. Slick little gun.

Supica says that these were a limited run around 1967.

Ruger SP-101. Shot like a dream, made a big mistake selling it and have regretted it ever since...

Dienekes, the Century Arms markings would indicate it was an export model revolver that was reimported. Smith & Wesson made several runs of 3" skinny barrel Model 10s in the mid-to-late 1960s for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police as well as the French Police. Some were also sold domestically.

I bought several of the domectic ones from Kiesler's back in the early 1980s that were police trade-ins. With that skinny barrel and square butt they had a very unique look to them. I thought they had a great balance though. I wish I had kept one for myself.

Regarding that Model 10, you can tell if it was French Police or Military issue if it has the characteristic scuff marks from when the gun hit the pavement during its first use...

Couldn't resist....

About one and a half decades back there was a Colt special production run for an U.S. gun wholesaler (Lew Horton?) called Colt Combat Python with 3" tube, .357 Mag. chambering, of course.

I've heard production was about 800 units, but I am not sure about that.

I have never seen one for real, so I don't know whether it's the best 3" revolver, but to judge from the pictures the Colt Combat Python certainly was one of the most beautiful.

From the revolvers more easily obtainable (and more practical as well) I think the best is either one of Smith & Wesson's Military Police models with 3" heavy barrel (M10/13/64/65). One advantage that's often overlooked is that you get a "full-length" extractor rod with the 3" Smiths that helps dumping the empties out of the cylinder more reliable.

Three-inch M10 skinny barrel - - -

Dienekes describes a revolver I obtained in about 1989, except mine has a round butt.

A friend ordered three or four of these - - I believe from the John Jovino outfit. He chose his - -nearly "As New" but it had been fired- - and gave me next pick. Mine was about a 95% piece, with excellent factory wooden stocks. The standard profile barrel (not the HB? had an interesting front sight - - Looked like that on a Chiefs Special, with the ramped sight beginning at the frame and running forward.

We were told by someone that these were from a small run made for Postal Inspectors. He pulled the barrel and installed it in a round butt model 12 frame - - Now, THAT was nifty little carry resolver. My friend died in '93, and I just couldn't afford to buy everything I wanted in the estate sale . . . . Sure wish I'd gotten that particular piece, though.

I still "kinda" own my copy, but - - - I'd had an S&W trained armorer go through it. He had a spare hammer and trigger. He de-spurred the hammer, fitted it and the smooth trigger to my revolver, and put an unbelievably smooth action job on it. He then returned the original parts, in case I ever wanted to retrofit the whole thing.

I kept it and shot it for several years, but almost never carried it. My ex-wife - - still a good friend - - is afflicted with terribly debilitating arthritis, and cannot comfortably operate her Chief Special, nor any auto pistol. The super slick M10 3" is on more-or-less permanent loan to her. It is compact enough to ride in her purse and heavy enough so that she can shoot standard velocity LSWC loads. The revolver soldiers on, and gives that gentle social worker a defense option she wouldn't have with a different handgun. Works for me.

Hey, RON in PA - - -

Nifty little ensemble. Can you tell me the brands/model numbers of the stocks on the two S&Ws? I'd guess they are mod 65 and a 13.

Thank you.
Johnny

Johnny: The model 13 has a set of Hogues(ironwood or pau ferro) and the 65 has a set of Butler Creek Boot Grips. The Rugers are all stock.

My fave...
