Best 30-06 bolt gun for the money?

From what folks have said here and back at The Firing Line, the Savage is hard to beat for the money. This new trigger they have has also gotten good reviews from users.

I bought a Savage Model 116FSAK and have been VERY pleased with it!
This model has the stainless action with a stainless, 22" medium heavy fluted barrel and an adjustable muzle brake.
I cleaned up the trigger and used one of Tubb's Final Finish kits on the barrel. Unfortunaely my shooting with it has been limited. I need a new scope. I intend to get a Duramax stock for it also. With the loads I have tried so far it looks like I can expect pretty consistant 3/4" groups at 100.
I traded an old Winchester Model 70 (post 64) for it and couldn't be happier. Savage makes a great product.

Actually, I'll have to differ with the Savage recomendation.
For looks, handling, and ability to accessorize, ect. My choices based on past and present experience:
1. Charles Daly "Superior" Mauser (Formerly MkX Mauser)
many, including my MkX I bought in '75 for 149.00, are basis for countless custom rifles of known ability. (my original barrel was sub-moa in .30/06 and accounted for my first 20+/- deer) It presently is a .338/06 and awaiting 'christening on big game this coming season.
2. Howa M1500, availabe with synthetic or laminated stock; uses many Rem 700 compatable components. Generally 1 Moa accuracy. Formerly used as basis for Weatherby Vangard.
Either of the above rifles are available for under 400.00, making them outstanding values.
The Savages aren't bad, but lacking in the looks and feel category to me.
Also, don't count out the CZ's. Very nice rifles, decent prices too.

The rifle to beat these days is the Tikka T3---accurate as all get out---free floated barrel---adj trigger---very lightweight----detachable mag---60 degree uplift----comes with scope rings and sling swivels-----a blued/syn one can be had for less that $500.
NOTHING ELSE COMES CLOSE IN THAT PRICE RANGE
BTW---I have 2 right now----and WILL have 3 once I can locate a stainless .338. Everything else is just an also-ran.

Another vote for the Savage. Our local Sports Authority has the 111 package for 349.99. Sometimes it goes on sale for 20 bucks off. Synthetic stock, Simmons 3-9x40 scope and sling. Pretty decent combo. plus they are accurate as hell

Off the bench I can get 4 bullets through a dime with amazing regularity. Killed a lot of game with it. Have utmost confidence in at as a hunting rifle. I'm on my second Savage, my first one now belongs to my brother. I can still shoot 1/2 inch groups with that rifle, a 110B model.
I use burris bases, a tasco scope. Have two main complaints over the years: the trigger is hard to adjust and the stock is too soft. I never cared about scratching it the way I worried about wooden stocked rifles, but its possible to overtighten the screws.
The muzzle brake is a neat feature, but I just leave mine closed (burned the paint off the hood of a truck), and the Semi fluted compact stainless steel barrel is light, but ALMOST like having a bull barrel, its' trick.
Even so, a modest "package gun" from wal-mart will last you a lifetime. Just ditch the cheesy simmons scope that comes with it.

Shop hard and you may come up with a new Savage, Remington, Ruger or CZ for $350-475. I will say the Savage is likely to be both cheapest and most accurate.

I have an older Sako (AV action) in 30-06 that is the only gun I use for hunting. It's accurate, reliable and built very well and fits me nicely. I don't know if it's the best for the money, it's the best for me. It cost me about $540 when I bought it from a guy with a FFL that didn't charge me any markup over his cost.

My favorite hunting rifle is my 30-06 Remington 700 BDL with a Leupold 3x-9x scope. With the wood stock, it has the looks of a classic hunting rifle.
