You're going to get as many answers as there are makes and models of rifles. The best is one that feels right to you and gives you the accuracy you expect. This can be anything from a inexpensive military surplus piece to a $20,000 custom. I don't really think there is a answer to the question.
I have 3. A nice 1903 Springfield in original condition, a Garand in Service rifle condition, and an older Savage in good condition. I like them all and the Savage is the one I carry in the bush as a critter gun. With a 190 grain Silvertip it will take a Brown Bear if necessary.
I cut my teeth on the Garand, used one in combat, and have one hanging proudly on the wall. But a pre-'64 Winchester Model 70 is hard to beat for hunting and target work.
I couldn't tell ya what is best to many variables there, but for a hunting or all around rifle a older Remington 700 is hard to beat for quality and price. I have been hunting deer and elk with one in a '06 over 25 years now and so far I am not feeling the need to look for a replacement.
I have five -- a Ruger M77 bought in the early '70s, a pre-'64 Winchester Model 70, two M1903A3s (one Remington and one Smith-Corona) and a very late H&R M1 Garand.
