I currently shoot with a Taurus Tracker in .357 and while it's been totally reliable and accurate, I can't help but think that the rifling is a little shallow for cast. I cast my own bullets out of wheel weights in a variety of sizes. The Tracker digests them all just fine, but the rifling is fairly shallow. Am I being nuts or is there something out there more suitable to shooting cast?

Thanks....

If you aren't experiencing severe leading, it would appear your rifling is doing the job. Rifling depth has little to do with whether or not it will work with cast bullets.

As an example, the 1911 Colt has very shallow rifling, in keeping with it's intended jacketed bullet design. But it shoots cast bullets just fine as long as they are not overly soft alloy.

The deepest revolver rifling was probably found on the older S&W & Colt revolvers designed for lead bullets in those pre-jacketed bullet days.

Mugsie,
my question would have to be what size groups are you getting and how much inprovement do you want?
Guns are for the most part individuals, like people, only not so random.
One of my 357 Blackhawks shoots smaller groups that the other. Is this the rifling, cylinder gap, forcing cone, combination of the above? I don't know because I can live with both. Same with my pair of Uberti 45 Colt clones.
Same make and model of guns, same barrel length, same caliber, same grips, different size groups.
Note, I'd prefer to buy Ruger more than anything else right now.

Rugers are the best current bet, IMO. Pre-lock Smiths are perfect as well.

But as the others have pointed out, if you don't have a problem, you don't have a problem.
