im going to alaska this june for the salmon run. as you know where there are large numbers of salmon you can count on grizley bears. i dont want to become a snack for a big grizley while im there so i just picked up a S&W 629 in 44 mag. I was wondering what the best ammo to carry to stop that bear where he stands. I have a buddy that said to epoxy a ball berring inide of the hollow point of the bullet. anyone try this will it effect the bullet?
thanks

Lordy, I hope I'm not just feeding the troll here, but. . . .

Don't epoxy your balls into anything. There are quite a few good choices for bear protection available commercially. Buffalo Bore, Garrett and CorBon all make deep penetrating .44 ammo. Pick non-expanding types for best penetration. If you can't find someone that stocks those, then pick up a factory load using Speer 270gr Gold Dots (these are soft points, not hollow points) or Federal Cast Core.

None of these will reliably stop a bear right there, unless you manage to hit the central nervous system. No handgun is a great choice for bear protection, but they are more convenient than large caliber rifles and shotguns. That 629 is EMERGENCY RESCUE EQUIPMENT, nothing more, nothing less. Like a tourniquet, fire extinguisher or the Jaws Of Life, if you are using your EMERGENCY RESCUE EQUIPMENT, things are already bad and headed for worse. Keep your wits about you, don't do stupid things, make enough noise that you won't surprise a bear, use proper food hygene to avoid becoming bear bait, and treat them with respect. 28 years now of sport fishing in some of the most remote and densly (bear) populated areas in Alaska, and never a single incident. Good luck and have fun.

mktvr, yeah, check out the Buffalo Bore and such. SFAIK they have websites.

Generally, I'd figure on a 300-grain bullet, for max penetration through heavy bone. Enjoy the practice, okay? You can use up all your ammo but one cylinder full; you'll never have time to reload. :) But, seriously, you better practice double-taps and steady fire.

I'd be real big on checking out the power of prayer if I really thought I needed to use that 629, though. And that bear wouldn't have much traction on slick ground...

Make sure and bring Vasoline and band aides.

Your friend is an IDIOT by the way, if he truly recommended that.

330 gr Garrett hammerheads are a very good defensive round for bears. And should not counted on be as a stopping round. No hand guns and darn few rifles will mud stomp a bear with one shot to the body.

I have shot 305gr Corbon flat point penatrators and the Garrett hammerheads. Both are hot and devastating rounds that would be your best bet to kill a brown bear with a .44 mag. That being said even with rounds like these do not expect a one shot stop on a peeved bear that has decided you look like lunch.

Isn’t it the Eskimos that say when dealing with bears, “Never empty you gun into the bear save the last round for yourself”. :D ..

Find or cast you some 300 grain flat nose wadcutters that are hard cast. They will help you, but the above suggestion about learnign the power of prayer will be an even better bet!!!:)

I bought some hardcast 300 and 320 grain loads for a 5.5" Ruger Redhawk when I was up there. I found them quite manageable in the Ruger. Problem was, over a year and a half I couldn't find a bear to attack me so I could try it out on them - all they wanted to do was hug me and be my friend. They're so cute!
