i second mad ogar's billennium suggestion. i think best is very subjective and it means what pistol feels best for you. for me, the beretta 92 fits my hand better than any other gun. for small hands i could see how it would not be the best, but have big palms and short fingers and the 92 is the best i have found. i also love how the smooth all the parts fint together. civilian 92s also have a great reliability record and are combat accurate.
if you like the fit, the billennium is the cream of the crop of 92s. i've seen it for btwn $1000-1200. its an all steel frame and brigadier slide which should make 9mm shots fell like nothing. it has an adjustable, single action trigger and frame mounted safety (cock and lock) which should make 1911 users happy. although, i've heard the trigger pull is not fantastic, there would be enough money left over for a trigger job. one could also get new sights b/c they are dovetailed and a fitted barrel for more accuracy. finally, with its carbon fiber grips and high polish finish, it just looks so sweet.
