Been thinking about getting on this high powered rifle train that seems to be popular among my buddies who shoot. Almost all of them are AR-15 fans. So to add a little variety to the mix at the range I have considered an AK-47. Now I know the difference in the two weapons, but what I don't know is the best brand for the buck. Say I'm working on a 1000 dollar budget, and I want a good new or used AK what would be a brand worth investing in? Also, and I don't mean to be difficult, but I want one with all black trim i.e. stock and foregrip.

Thanks.

Lots of luck.

No, I am not being cute.

Unless you want to settle for a Mishmash Saiga, you are not in AK country at that price point.

Ironically, you can get a true high-powered rifle, as opposed to intermediate-powered guns like the AR and AK, for considerably less money. You can be the "sniper" in your group, with your bolt action Mausers, Enfields, Mosin-Nagants, etc.

Have you looked into Arsenal AK's? I know they get some flak here and there, but they're generally good guns. My father owns the SA M-7 Classic and it's a beautiful gun. Hard to find because they're discontinued and sought after, but I think you may be able to find one within your price range, atleast before Nov. 4th you could

I think a Saiga is your best buy hands down. They're some of the least expensive AK's out there as well as some of the best built and most accurate.

The big downside to them is that they come in a sporter rifle configuration and you have to spend some extra money and time to convert them back to a more traditional AK configuration. It's not a difficult project though.

I've heard good and bad things about Arsenals. They built a reputation for turning out a good product and then apparently starting a year or two ago they let some sloppy builds get through.

Sgl-20

recently bought an already converted "mishmash" (love that term!) saiga for $850. i like it alot but havent got to shoot it much yet. kinda wish i held out though- arsenal is now making SGL-20 saiga that is already converted including standard handguards, muzzle brake, etc. going for about a grand on gunbroker.com
