I read a lot over at www.ak-47.net. I don't think there's consensus on what's the best value. Lotta argument, no agreement.
Some general themes...
MAADI's are thought by some to be worst of the bunch. (But not every one agrees...)
Romanian SAR's and WASR's are generally considered 'decent' cheap ones. But there are some lemons among them.
VEPR's and Russians are generally considered best.
I guess most folks think that the 'value line' is pretty steady--the more you spend, the better you get.
I would not feel bad about getting a WASR from www.aimsurplus.com. That's about the cheapest out there. I would have it checked out immediately. If its a lemon, then AIM is very good about returns/exchange.
Edited to add--have you considered getting one in 5.45X39? That's the current issue round. Ammo is marginally more expensive that 7.62X39, but is considered more accurate and has much less recoil.
