Hi I'm thinking of getting an xd 45 is the barrel length a big deal? I assume reliability is the same. does the extra inch in the service model give it any more velocity(that matters). Does it affect Hollowpoint opening? I use wwb fmj in my 1911 will the xd in 4 in give up a lot of the already slow mv? thanx-Joe

Depends on what you want to do with the XD45. If you are going to shoot lots of competition, or just want a little more accuracy at the range (at over 10yrds), I'd say go with the 5" model.

The Tactical XD45 has an advantage that you can change out the guide rod (I use Don's Fat stainless rod) and choose which weight of recoil spring you want to use. The factory weight is around 18.5#, I use a typical 1911 20# recoil spring in my setup. The 4" models only have the factory rod/spring combo, no after market for that either, so you can't change spring weights. If you want to change springs after 3K-5K rounds, you need to buy another factory combo rod/spring.

I have the Compact Tactical, so it's what I carry and shoot at the range:D

I would use it as a range gun and perhaps ccw if I can handle it as well as my 1911

I got the 4" so I could CCW it. The grip on the full size one (and the 4" with the full size grip) is LOOOONG, especially when you are used to carrying a Glock 26. You can have 10+1 of .45 with the compact and carry full size mags with the grip extention/filler for reloads or for use at the range.
You'll probably lose a little velocity but the .45 doesn't need velocity to do it's job. You'll also lose some sight radius with the 4" but accuracy should be the same. What you get in return is a gun that's much easier to carry in my opinion. It's a pretty soft shooter also, comparable to the 1911s.

Buddy, I have the 5" Tactical and there is NO WAY you are going to CCW with it. I can see mine in the mirror and I live in Fairbanks, Alaska where is fairly cold (ha). It is a big, badass beast. You will however, upon purchase of an XD45 5" have got yourself a great deal on a highly accurate and stone-cold reliable, high-cap home defense and range destroying handgun.

i think that the best of both worlds when it comes to the xd's is the service model, highly accurate, and reliable, as well it is able to be a ccw. i carry my xd service model and have a sc as well. the sc is nice but the service is my go to gun, carry hd, idpa etc.

dan weasel are you saying all xd45 or just the 5"?
I think he was talking about the 5" barrel. In general, though, XDs aren't necessarily the best choice for concealed carry. They are pretty heavy, even for a polymer pistol. A good holster will do wonders though. If you are planning to conceal it, you should consider the 4" barrel. More specifically, the .45 compact. The 5" barrel is a better option for home-defense only. Even then, most people prefer the balance of the 4" barrel over the 5" from my experience.

The XD is a wonderful gun. Accurate, solid construction, and reliable as hell. Great ergos too. BTW, 4 inches is plenty for any .45 load to do its job.

Here's a shallow reason--I think the 5" barrel XD45 looks better so that's what I bought.

I've got the XD45 Tactical 5" and CCW it all the time. In the summer, I wear a sports coat. Spring, Fall, and Winter, I wear a light jacket, or coat. It easily disappears.
