OK, I read Lee "Modern Reloading Second Edition" Book by Richard Lee twice and it left me with a LOT of questions. What book should I read next? I'm still very much a cautious beginner and I need to know more.

Need more elaboration on bullet types. More elaboration on bullet seating. I don't understand why there is no load data for certain bullet weight/powder combinations. I don't understand why lead/jacked/plated bullets of the same weight take drastically different powder charges. I want to understand how to calculate loads myself. More that I can't think of offhand.

For example. The Lee book left me with no idea there is a difference between a jacketed bullet and a plated bullet.

i really like speer #13...

but, some of your questions either aren't explained, or you can get better explanations on various forums.

for a wealth of reloading knowledge, check out the forums at:

www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php
www.handloadersbench.com

also, get sierra's number. it is an 800 number, and those guys can answer about any question you can dream of. they also respond via e-mail. best thing is, they don't care if you are using their product or not, they will help you anyway.

quick answers: some bullet/powder combinations aren't listed because in some cases there are so many conceivable combos, they cannot all be covered, or in some cases (speer, hornady, nosler, hodgdon, barnes), they want you to buy their stuff, so they will only show you their products.

don't try to calculate loads yourself. start w/ loading manual data, then experiment from there. this process takes time and is best learned by hands-on.

Dakotasin covered this one pretty much...

The different load data takes into account the coefficient of friction of the outside material, be it copper, plating, or just lead and also the hardness of the bullet.

If you mean to calculate a good load for your gun, it is basically trial and error within safe publushied specs. Like if the manual says 10-20grains of Powder X, shoot a few with 10 grains, 12 grains, 14 grains, etc and use your results to narrow it down to what works best for you. If you mean why cant you juts use some Powder Y instead of Powder X, that isnt a good idea generally due to powder burn rates and things like that.
