For small and light it's hard to beat the Kahr line of 45 acp pistols. From the tiny PM45, the P45 to the larger TP45, you get a slim, reliable package, easy to conceal, smaller than the Glock and much smaller than the HK. However, HK reliability is tops. It comes at the cost of size and weight, as the HK USPc is not a small firearm.

I own both HKs and Kahrs. I am comfortable using either as my CCW. Currently I'm toting a P45 and find it extremely easy to carry, easier than my HK. Glocks are quality pistols but I prefer other brands.

you might get a beeter follow up shot with say a 9 mm + P AND IT MIGHT JUST EXPAND TO 5/8 OF AN INCH(.625) instead of just put a 45. cal hole thru.also if it expands and does not go thru, the bad guy would have absorbed all the bullets energy.

ADD: the glock 36 is single stack , so for everyone who is saying thickness is what really counts, its thinner than allot of the 1911's

Although the G36 and the 1911's are single stacks....the 1911 is significantly thinner.

A quick measurement of the mag width = G36 = 0.83
1911 = 0.53

Slide width = G19 1.01

1911 0.89
The slide width on the G36 is identical to the G19.

I find a 1911 is much more comfortable in a IWB holster. BUT...much depends on the holster, the belt, and the individual wearing it.

If you plan to carry OWB....width doesn't make much difference.

I like Glocks.....just not for concealed carry.

Another Colt Defender vote

I am sold on the Colt Defender after owning one for about 1-1/2 years and putting 700 rounds through it without a problem. The gun is quite thin for easy concealment, either IWB or OWB. It weighs 25 ounces empty. I generally carry OWB in a Kramer horsehide belt scabbard.

1911's?

im pretty new to firearms and have allot to learn
and at the risk of incurring the wrath of 90% of this forum...
im getting allot of 1911 recommendations, its been 100 years, are you telling me that there hasn't been a better design for 100 years

i have read the thr threads about the 1911 being outdated, and im just trying to make sure that even though its been 100 years, u guys still think this is the best ccw choice out there

if i just said something incredibly stupid or offended u im sorry and im in no way trying to disparage an American icon and defender of freedom. i hope i dont get flamed beyond recognition ;)

The internal combustion engine was invented 100 years ago and most of us are still using it.

It is clear that not everybody feels the 1911 design is outdated or inadequate. If you like variety, the 1911 has been modified to have polymer frames (Kimber, Wilson, etc.), double action triggers (Para Ordnance), aluminum frames and barrel lengths from 3 inches to 6 inches.

You said you wanted a slim .45 for IWB carry and easy concealment, and the 1911 fits that spec. But you can get a Glock 36 or Kahr P45 if that suits you better.

I have a Taurus PT145SS & have tried to find reasons not to like it so I can go out & buy one of the pretty guns. I can't! It shoots very well, feels great in my hand & has been 100% reliable. I don't know of another 45 that small & light with 10 + 1 capacity. They are available for under $350 new so you don't have to be too concerned about holster wear etc :)
Somebody asked why a 45? the ammo is readily available & unlike most other calibers, you don't need exotic ammo to make them effective.

"Better" is subjective, and you will reach your own conclusions on that in due time. There have certainly been a lot of different designs in the last 100 years...

The 1911 has not merely survived nearly 100 years, it has thrived, and the number of 1911 manufacturers and 1911 buyers is enormous. There are a lot of reasons for that.

It all depends on what YOU shoot the best. It may be the 1911, and it may not. In general, most designs you will be considering are based on the John Browning locking mechanism design. I don't care if its Glock, HK or Sig. Its the same design.

The Colt Lightweight Commander XSE is an excellent choice in a 1911 styled CCW piece, but other companies make a similar or smaller pistol.

I own the following:

Para C-6 - Definitely the smallest, but I can't get 100% reliability from the thing
Glock 30 - A little thick, but I carry it mostly
Glock 36 - Nice and thin, but I just like double-digit rounds available
Taurus PT145 - The best ergonomics and size-efficiency I've ever found, really

When I asked myself which of the above I would reach for if I heard something go bump in the night and I were scared, I realized it would be a Glock. So even with these choices and about a dozen others, I realize I trust the Glock so there's just no reason to carry anything else.

In the area of compact 45s I have heard very few criticisms of the Taurus Pt-145 and 745 Pro. They are apparently accurate, light, and very reliable. I carry an M&P 9C. I'm learning that toting it IWB is a bit of a pain because of the bulk of the slide. I carry it in a Comptac CTAC holster and it is a very slim rig but I am seriously considering switching to my Combat Commander as my carry gun. It is much slimmer in the slide but it is a bit longer on the grip which will make it print a bit more. The shorter grip of the M&P conceals very nicely under a t-Shirt in the summer. My personal recommendation would be to get a Taurus 745 Mil-Pro. Carry it IWB in a thin kydex holster and carry the single stack reload in your front pocket.

Concealable 45 is a 1911 I perfer in order a Colt Agent , Defender , Colt Officer acp. Agent and Defender just a little bigger than a PPK/S and slighty thicker .
All of mine a 100% relieable and IWB disappear.

Colt Defender with slim grips (mine has Alumagrips). I carry IWB/SOB and usually just wear Tshirts or light jackets/hoodies. Have no problem carrying it the same way throughout the summer wearing khaki shorts/Tshirts.
