Hey all,

Quick question. Being a gun owner for a few years, I was interested in pursuing a CCW class/instruction in the Southeastern Michigan area. At the few ranges where I target shoot I have seen a few classes taking place and have not been impressed (think a bunch of super heavyweight women for classmates and 2 accidental discharges in one session).

Im not great with a pistol- but I am fairly accurate with a shotgun (slugs) and rifles. I just dont have a ton of pistol experience. Is there anyone ex-LE or military in the Detroit area on this site who can work with me in a kind of personal instruction & can certify me for a cpll?

Thanks

The first year the CCW came out in MI-I got mine at Irv gun shop in Inkster. Three punks ( one worked there ) held & tied up the owner--stole all the guns--set the bldg. on fire--owner died in fire--kids got life.
Try TOP GUN in Taylor-734-282-8470
WOLVERINE in Brownstown--734-479-1390
Need more names for instructors--call Ken @Westborn Guns 313-291-4712
Good luck with your CPL...........

Be careful as there are some "outlaw" instructors in Michigan who don't follow state law when doing CPL instruction and if discovered you'd get your CPL pulled.

If you take a class from a NRA instructor the class you want is the Personal Protection in the Home class. That class meets state law as long as it is taught "by the book."

There are some instructors who teach the NRA Basic Pistol class and add a bunch of other stuff to it to meet the minimum state requirements. This is NOT the class you want. It is probably legal, but is a joke essentially.

If you do take a NRA Personal Protection in the Home class the class has to be taught to NRA standards in order for it to be valid in Michigan. State law requires that any class be "taught according to the standards established by the instructor's certifying agency."

For the NRA Personal Protection in the Home class ask the instructor the following:

What is the round count? It should be 98 rounds minimum

Will we shoot from cover and from kneeling? Both are part of the standard NRA curriculum and are required for it to be a "legit" class.

Who is doing the legal portion? It needs to be an attorney or a cop. If the instructor is teaching the legal, and is not an attorney or cop, find someone else.

Now, the other organization that can certify instructors in Michigan is MCOLES (Mich Commission on Law Enforcement Standards).

MCOLES certification is really designed for police instruction, but is allowable for civilian CPL instruction. You'll find many, many, more instructors doing NRA instruction then MCOLES instruction though.

The MCOLES curriculum is different and I don't know the details or what you should ask if you happen to run across a MCOLES instructor.

If you're in the Royal Oak area, Target Sports has a good course. The instructor, Jim (whose last name I now forget), is a Detroit police officer and a good guy. You will spend a fair amount of time on the range there, shooting about 150 rounds or so, including off-hand shooting. It's an NRA-approved course.

Who cares? You're probably not going to learn anything from a CCW class anyway (Rob and a couple others are an exception.) Go, learn the law, shoot your required rounds into a piece of paper at the legally subscribed distance and get your piece of paper.

Then get some real training in how to fight with a gun. Rob offers occasional classes, Steve Fisher is local and among the best instructors in the country, and there are traveling gurus who come through from time to time. Take a class anytime you can scrape up the funds. Practice every chance you get.
