I am looking to purchase a custom STI. What is the best shop to buy from for good quality and a decent price?

Thanks,
Joe

Sir, your question does not make sense. It sounds like you want to find a custom gunsmith to modify an STI, but STIs are custom-built pistols. Why would you want to pay top dollar for a custom pistol and then have some other gunsmith customize the customizing?

Let me rephrase ...

Ok I know STI is custom ... however, I have seen shops like Brazos that sell the stock STI with xyz for upgrades.

My question is which are the shops like Brazos does the best custom work on an STI you buy from them for the money.

Thanks,
Joe

As far as I know STI will build a pistol any way you want it. I cannot imagine any reason to have a third party work over a brand new, custom pistol. Have you discussed this with STI?

My suggestion would be to buy the frame, slide, etc., and learn how everything works yourself. You aren't going to need any esoteric tools, and what tools you _will_ need will likely cost under $100 or so.

STI

Correia has a 'group buy' going on as we speak (type). What would normally cost o/a 1,000 elsewhere can be had for considerably less through Larry Correia's group buy.

Mine did not need any 'customizing'.

salty.

I googled Larry Correia's but didn't find anything ... does someone know who I would contact?

EDIT:
As you were, I found the thread.

Thanks,
Joe

A vote for Dawson Precision

Joevilla:
I've heard a lot of good things about Brazos custom, didn't know about them until after I got my STI. However, I did get an STI trojan 5.0 in 9mm from Dawson Precision several years ago. Had them put on a fiber optic front sight and an S&A magwell with MSH. Picked it up at Dawson's since it was about 1/2 hour from where I live. Not sure if its true (but you can ask), they can test fire the gun for reliability before giving it to you. Hope this is helpful. BTW, very happy with my purchase...reliable, accurate. 9mm on a 1911 frame is a very soft shooter. I use +p ammo quite often and it still has less kick than a .45.

I've been happy with Dawson Precision in general and their "enhancement package" in particular.

If the 150.00 enhancement package isn't enough there's always this. Ala carte is also available.

I can't tell you if they're "the best" though. I haven't used anyone else.

Dave Dawson does nice work. http://www.dawsonprecision.com/

Bob Londrigan does nice work. http://www.brazoscustom.com/

Benny Hill does nice work. http://www.triangleshootingsports.com/

Dan Bedell does nice work. http://www.shootersconnection.com/

I've got a dozen or so pistols built on STI frames. Even one factory gun, if you can believe that :neener:

My Open guns are a pair of Bedell "shorty", my Limited guns are Hill, and my carry gun is a Hill. I think that Bedell builds a really amazing gun for the money, have been friends with Hill for quite a while, buy stuff from Dawson regularly, and like Londrigan a lot. The serious shooters in my home club like all four guys about equally, which I'm sure annoys them equally too :)

None of them will steer you wrong, IMO.
