I'm currently planning a build on a savage 110 action and am planning on a heavy sporter or light varmint weight barrel. Price is an object but not as much so as turn around time. Caliber is going to be 6.5 but not sure which. So i need help choosing a barrel maker. this will be a hunting rifle but i want at moa to 300 yards

Have you shot it at 300yrds yet? My factory barreled 10FP has no problem shooting 3" at 300yrds. Anyways, you can rule out Kreiger as they will want to install it themselves, but Pacnor will sell you a prethreaded barrel.

the original barrel has approx. 5k rounds through it mostly hot handloads and currently shoots 3.5" at 100 yrds i have been considering pac-nor and mcgowen but i would like some insight from people who have them first.

McGowen has several calibers "ready to go" for Savage, just tell them what chambering, and barrel length.

A friend and I had barrels made in .358 WSSM. McGowen also installed the barrels on our Savage actions. They shoot 1/2" groups at 100yards. I'm perfectly happy with my McGowen barrel and the service, but best of all the price was much better than I could have done anywhere else, and when I asked, "what about _____?" the answer was always yes.

That sounds great kludge but what about some of the other drop in brands mcgowen seems to be all I can find info on. 1/2"@100 is excellent but if $100 more gets me 1/4 I would pay it

.5" @ 100 with a cartridge that has no match bullets is pretty astounding.

I've had Shilens and now McGowans on heavy target rigs both of which would get deep into the .3"s without too much of a struggle.

Here's my advise. Buy a McGowan and shoot the pee out of it. When your handloading and shooting ability gets refined to the point the barrel is holding you back then spring for a REAL high end barrel.

go to ershaw.com
now youll hear all kind of there barrels are crap post. ive used 5 from them and they all shoot the same as the shilens that my buddy uses on his 7 mag and 300 mag. i just put one on my remington and it will out shoot his with his fl sized ammo. shipped with fluting for 315 and about a 3 month wait compared to a 6-12 from the others.
also you can pay as much as you want to but if the ability is there the barrel will make you better. dont but a "x" named barrel and expect to set up and shoot 1 hole groups. ive put 10 round groups up with my ershaw that spread to .85" and thats shoot, load shoot load....
