Thx jcwit.

Yeah, whether check weights are commercial grade like the Lyman set, or home jobs like mine, safe and clean storage is key to consistent reliable readings.

Paperclip: When I get each paperclip weighed, I'll bring along some cutters and trim them down to very near the charge weights I regularly use. This is good for proofing my scale's response & consistency in the weight range it is actually used.

I will agree that the Lee scale is not fast, neither is any beam scale for that matter compared to an electronic, it is a VERY accurate scale. Its main defect is that its so light weight it makes it hard to work with where the beam scales made from metal give more "mass" for lack of a better word and aren't so susceptible to bunps ect.

I will say that the prices for the Ohaus scales seem very reasonable for what ones getting, I wonder what the country of origin is, out of curiosity.

BTW even Ohaus makes an all plastic beam scale that they claim as accurate.

The company was founded in 1914 and is headquartered in Pine Brook, New Jersey ... Ohaus Corporation operates as a subsidiary of Mettler-Toledo International, Inc. The company was formerly known as Ohaus Scale Corporation and changed its name to Ohaus Corporation in 1988.

Ohaus Corporation designs, develops, and markets scales and balances for the laboratory, educational, industrial, and specialty markets worldwide.

RCBS sells many same Ohaus scales like 5-0-5 and 10-10 under their trade name.

Natchez has the RCBS Rangemaster 750 on sale right now for $99 plus there is a $10 rebate from RCBS. I have seen reviews that say it is a good scale. I unfortunately have a cheap crap scale and need a new one. Nice timely question asked here.

I have owned a RCBS Rangemaster 750 for a couple of years now and love it. I still have a couple beam scales to double check weights and it has always been spot on.

Know all that, easily found using google and the name Ohaus. Does not give country of origine. Ford is a U.S. auto company with autos made all over the world and many imported and sold right here in the U.S.A.

2rott - my dime is well worn. Yours weighs like a newly minted one = heavier. Someone else's dime will be different.

That's why, whatever substitute checkweight object you decide upon, you've got to find out exactly what it weighs on the best scale available to you (other than the scale you want to periodically check). I used a pharmacist's dispensing scale. Grocery store scales are not sensitive enough. Calibrated lab scales from your community college or HS would do fine.

Ohaus Corporation operates as a subsidiary of Mettler-Toledo International, Inc.

Mettler-Toledo International is a publicly traded company (NYSE:MTD).

It was formed by the merging of two companies: Mettler, based in Switzerland, and Toledo Scale, based in Columbus, Ohio, USA.

Yes, I understand all that, and yes the companies are besed in Switzerland and the U.S.A., but the question still stands, where is the product manufactured, meaning the country of origian? Where is the scales made?

Example again
Kodak is an American company based in Rochester N.Y., most of their camerias are made in china. china being the country of origian.

Does this clarify it?

OK, I got ya. ;):D

I think for the most part, sub $100 digital scales are mass produced in China. Ohaus website indicates their calibration work is done in Swiss labs but the bulk of manufacturing/assembly is probably done in China.

I think it will come to the brand name providing the Quality Control and customer service. As we have experienced with made in China but assembled/sold by USA brand products like RCBS (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=2988547#post2988547), I won't be surprised if the Rangemaster 750 and other higher priced digital scales use Chinese made parts or are re-branded Chinese made equipments.

In the end, if you buy from USA brand company, hopefully you will receive better QC and customer service, in case you have problems with your product. Of course, you can buy USA made digital scales, but it will set you back around $600+.
