The best group I ever shot (and granted, I shot it at 50 yards, but I shoot how I hunt, and where I hunt in WI I almost never have an opportunity to shoot beyond 100 yards, so I practice at 50) was with my 1942 Mosin Nagant 91/30, sitting at a bench with the forened supported with improvised cross sticks. I put four shots into a group that measured about the diameter of a nickle from center to center.
Because the shots were so close together, I was having a hard time tracking the hits as I had no optics. For some reason, the ammunition I was using (see below) was kicking exceptionally hard, and I was hurting pretty bad after shot four. The fifth shot I pushed straight down about 5 inches because I peeked and the recoil really stung!:banghead: Normally, the 203gr. Brown Bear loads are very comfortable and soft recoilling, but not the 174 gr. loads.
Had some curious extraction issues as well...
-Standard sights, adjusted for a 50yd zero, lightened trigger to about 5lbs, shimmed action with no barrel bedding. I used It was a hot day, probably about 87-89 degrees with high humidity. Ammunition was Brown Bear 174gr. 'Match' 7.62x54r.
It's nothing compared to some of the excellent shooting I've seen so far, but I was impressed that I was able to coax near-MOA accuracy out of a 1942 Izzy. Beauty in the eye of the beholder, right?
