From those that have tried them ( I know each gun will have its proponents ), which seems to be the best balance between being able to shoot to accurately fast..best for reloading quickly and for reliability and maintenance.

Ones that I am looking at..

Glock 34
CZ75
Para P18.9 LDA

I know Sevigny shoots a G17 and G34/35, Angus shoots a CZ, Todd shoots a LDA, Langdon shoots used to shoot a Beretta and now a Sig, ..but I am looking for average competitor experiences...

anything from HK, SmithandWesson, etc that are viable for competition..

also a factor would be the availability of full cap mags for IPSC production..

thanks for all the thoughts and experience..

The three guns you listed all have brought home some tin.

You really ought to be shooting all 3 and see what works best for you. Set up some classifier stages and see which brings you the best times.

Of the ones up there, I like the glock best, but I've never given the LDA much time though.

For me it all boils down to ergonomics. Darn Glocks point way too high for me. I haven't shot the Para, but between the Glock and the CZ, the 75 suits me best. The hardest part for me is the double to single action transition.

Have you had the opportunity to shoot the CZ 75/85 much? I'll be in your neck of the woods for the Mile High and you are welcome to shoot mine all you like. Let me know and I'll bring it to the match along with four or five hundred rounds of my favorite 130 power factor weenie loads. Maybe we can sneak off to an unused bay after day one and blast away.

Doesn't matter. The only thing that's important is which one fits your hand best. And good ammo. What another guy shoots means squat. If a pistol doesn't fit your hand and your ammo isn't accurate in that pistol, you might as well play golf.
For the average guy, a .45 Government Model. Fits most hands and there's lots of aftermarket stuff that can be added when you know how to shoot it.

Till you mentioned international IPSC, I would have said the CZ. Throw the more than 10 rounds in the mess and you end up with the Glock.

Its all about the reload. 2 more rounds in a mag can be 1.5 every few stages.

17+1=18 or two IPSC 9 round arrays. No reload for a Glock.

USPSA? Any of them. I still dont care for the LDA, even the worked over ones.

I've got one of each, but I end up shooting the Glock most often, because the trigger is consistent for each shot. I really do like the CZ as well, but I can't really say I'd recommend the LDA for Production; the trigger reset is so long that you need to get your finger all the way off the trigger to allow it to pick up on the hammer again, and you don't need to do that with either the CZ or the Glock.

Beretta 92.

Because when you get fed up with it you can throw it at the target!

The sheer weight of the gun should make major and possibly even get bonus points!

Darn Glocks point way too high for me
I had the same problem with my M22. Couldn't hit the broad side of a Roseanne Barr if my life depended on it. That was until I had the stock sights replaced with Lenny Magill (Trilux) night sights. Something in their shape, size and elevation did wonders for it. Today I consider it one of the five most accurate handguns I have ever owned.

Just a thought.

The best gun all around (as long as you can shoot it well) is the Glock 17. It does everything you need it to, it's easy to shoot, it's reliable, it's accurate (enough), and you can fit 18 rounds in a stock mag with a bit of minor tweaking for the international shooters.

Glock also offered the 17 with Heine sights for a short time, so you can use those sights in IPSC.

You can put a 3.5 lb connector in it, and it will still pick up 5 lbs (IPSC rule, again).

If you're just going to use a gun for US production, then I like the new Springfield XD built specifically for USPSA. I've seen a picture of it somewhere, but it's got all the bells and whistles, including Bo-Mar sights, mag well, match barrel, extended "beavertail," Dawson fiber optic front, lightened trigger, etc. The list goes on and on. It looks like a Limited gun, short of the 10 rd mags. I'd like to just try one, once.

Welcome to THR, Phil!

For those who don't know, the guy above there (gmshtr) is Phil Strader. Aka "someone to whom it would be good to listen closely too"

Nice shooting at AWARE...didn't you mention that you had some video around somewhere? I'd love to see it...

Hi Phil...

thanks..I forgot about the SA XD...have seen pictures of it..but not seen one.

anyone know what mags it takes..heard there were some full cap mags for it ..

I would say the CZ, very reliable very accurate.
In fact, I have a CZ75 BD that I shot production in IPSC that I am selling. I'm in Denver as well if you are interested. I bought it new in the box, and it is in excellent condition. I am currently shooting a CZ75 limited 10. I love those CZ's!

I've heard bad things about the Para 9mm widebodies. Availability for one, magazine problems for another. Get the .40. Then you can shoot it in limited and make major. :D

I forgot about the XD too. I had one and sold it because of continual operator error. I tended to ride the slide stop with my high thumb and the gun often failed to go to slide lock. I haven't seen the new tricked out
offering, but I have shot the new 5 incher in a 9mm and it is pretty sweet.

Phil who? :p Oh you mean this guy:

Shooter's Paradise

I shoot a CZ75BD (decocker) for IPSC production. I love it, but I haven't competed with anything else. I do know that the accuracy of a production CZ is hard to beat with anything else within $100 of it.

Thanks. AWARE was a great match. Incredible.

There are some mods you can make to Beretta mags to fit the XD. I'm not exactly sure what, but they'll work with the right TLC.

I'm working on the AWARE videos. They'll be ready for the website soon.

Division

Is Production for shooters too scared to customize their gun?
Is Production for shooters too cheap to have a gunsmith do it?
Phil who?

I can shoot a DAO evolver in production, right?

Any of the guns will serve you well. It boils down to which you feel comfortable with. I shoot a CZ 85 Combat and have had good results (at least on the gun's part).
the Para will have the capacity with 18 factory (don't think the +2 base plates are legal in production but I seldom incounter internatinal rules)

When it HAS to work every shot, every time.......Beretta 92. I,ve seen Glocks fail, CZs fail and any number of race guns fail. I've never seen a Beretta 92 fail.

'Reliable' vs 'Durable'

Last poster got me thinking............

The CZ75 is one superb gun (I run three Tanfoglio/EAA 'clones').

The Glock M17/34/35 are three superb guns (if one cares for their unique feel).

The Para Ordnance LDA series are winning huge kudos from those using them (have one friend waxing ecstatic).

But as I thought (and thought somemore) I realized that while I've seen (with mine wn eyeballs) each of these fail in some fashion I'd never seen a Beretta 92 (NOT the 'others') fail; not never.

I DO know that the 92/96 guns may not be as incredibly durable as the other three mentioned (seen that, too), but I can't think of even one incident of puking during a stage.
Ever.
:scrutiny:

'Course, I don't see that many..........

I've heard many good things about the Beretta 92G Elite II as a competition gun.

I would give one a try if you have the oppurtunity.
