New gun for use in IDPA AND USPSA-Suggestions!

Hi all,

I live in the great state of NJ where we are limited to a magazine capacity of 15 rounds. We also need a permit to purchase each and every handgun. I will have one extra permit which I would like to use for another competition gun. I already have several suitable guns but I can always use another for use down the road.

I will list my guns below. My question is what do you think would make a good addition keeping the 15 round capacity issue in mind. I'd also like to hear your rationale.

1) STI Edge .40 limited to 15 round mags
2) S&W M&P Pro 9mm with 15 round mags
3) Springfield XD 40 Tactical
4) S&W 625 .45 revolver
5) Caspian 1911 .45
6) Para Ordnance .40 single stack 1911 with 10 round mags
7) HK P30S 9mm with 15 round mags ( I have not used this one in competition yet but it is an option)

Okay so what would you add to the collection for competition and why? I am not a Glock fan and don't want to learn the different grip angle. I have other guns but these are the ones most suitable for competition shooting.

I realize I probably do not need anything else but that doesn't mean I don't want something else. ;)

Thanks for the suggestions!

Let's see, now, where do these things fall in USPSA and IDPA?

1) STI Edge .40 limited to 15 round mags
Limited or L10 NO IDPA.

2) S&W M&P Pro 9mm with 15 round mags
Production or SSP

3) Springfield XD 40 Tactical
I don't know if it is on the Production list; ESP

4) S&W 625 .45 revolver
Revolver or ESR if 4"

5) Caspian 1911 .45
SS or CDP

6) Para Ordnance single stack 1911 with 10 round mags
Caliber? L-10, SS; CDP if .45, ESP

7) HK P30S 9mm with 15 round mags
Production, SSP

OK, I would get a real IDPA ESP. Maybe a STI Eagle with bushing barrel. Maybe in .40 for commonality with the Edge, but loaded lighter.

Hey Jim,

Thanks for responding. What would be the advantages of the STI bushing barrel over the Para single stack .40?

Don't see a real "SSR" revolver in there. You could pick up the S&W 686 SSR, or any of a number of other suitable 4" .38 wheelguns that would make you competative in that division of IDPA.

Looks like you have something that is pretty well optimized for any division other than possibly USPSA open?

So either a 9major open gun, or something not related to competition is what I would buy if I just wanted to buy another gun.

If I could only have one gun it would have an SVI slide on it as the breech face can be changed to every caliber you would use in either game. So your Esp gun can go to a CDP gun both with bushing barrels then a bull barrel for limited/limited 10.

I also built this one using two different slides as a commander 9mm for ESP and a shorty open gun. I will say this, thats the last gun I'm going to build like that. Its simple to machine a slide and frame to fit one another but a lot more work to fit another slide to the existing frame with no ill effects to the first set up.

You could also get something like a Glock in 45 ACP and use it in everything but it will be less than ideal for any of them. Sure cost a lot less though.

That is one sweet SVI. I might consider looking for a used one as I can't afford $4k for a new one this year. My wife is more than good to me, but I have already purchased several guns this year.

I have a Ruger MK II .22 with a red dot sight and a Clark custom four inch bull barrel. It is geared towards bullseye shooting. Maybe I should buy a S&W model 41 and turn it into a steel challenge gun?

How bout an M&P Pro .40? Could use it in limited 10 and ESP. With a Storm Lake 9mm barrel it could also be a back up to the M&P 9mm Pro.
