Just bought a Ruger p97dc .45acp and was curious to what the best home defence ammo would be for me to purchase.I bought a couple of boxes of cheaper stuff to plink with tomorrow. But not sure if i should get some Hydro shock or something for home defence..Thanks for any suggestions

I use Winchester SXT, 'coz it feeds the best on my 1911's. Other's prefer Gold Dot, Corbon, Golden Saber... I don't worry too much about .45 ACP's performance on >4" platform. It was designed as a great stopper from inception. HP or no HP, its a good stopper.

I have never seen a 1911 that wouldn't feed the Hydra-Shock; and it has the best street rating for what thats worth.

When finding duty ammo, you go about it this way… you buy a lot of different brands and shoot it up. The ammo that is reliable goes to step two and the ammo that wasn’t gets to be plinking ammo. Step two is looking for the most accurate loads. Take the best 2 or 3 loads and start over. If you can fire 500 rounds of a specific load with no problems, then that is a pretty good indication that it might be reliable in your gun.
You do NOT go about it by asking what's the groups favorite, then just buying that. It might be popular, but out of your gun it might be inaccurate or unreliable.

Go with the Speer Gold Dot 230 +P, or the Winchester RA45TP. Those rounds seem to show the best results in real scientific repeatable testing, and are in use by many Dept's across the country.

Ill second George Hills comments......Ive had guns thats loved one brand and the next one over in the safe didnt.

Get a good JHP, Sagers, Dots, Hydras.....SXT's whatever you can find and see what YOUR gun likes.

Shoot well.

My top recommendation is the new Taurus hex copper round

You can see it tested here:

If it is too long to feed well in your gun, my second recommendation is Cor Bon 185 or 230 grain +P

I do not recommend the new Hydroshock, here's why.. it is totally re-designed and does not open up as well after clothing barriers as the older HS, which was like a CCI lawman with a post in the center. Note 50 % expanded after denim barriers, 50% do not expand at all and severely overpenetrated. Both expanded/unexpanded would way overpenetrate a human torso.... (bullets 6 & 7 in the test)

You should break the gun in with 500 plinking rounds and then clean it and try 200 rounds of your preferred load to see how it functions. I also place a Mag safe in the chamber of my self defense pistols.

Now if i shoot my new gun 100 rounds should i not clean it untill i reach the 500 mark. Thanks for any info

Sure, that's fine

What I really meant is that after you break it in, and before you try the intended self defense loads, make sure it is clean and properly lubed. This way you can rule out grit or improper lube in your test, if there are failures. I usually use Synthetic 5-30 motor oil to lube my combat pistols.

The Taurus hex bullets were a bit too long in my 1911s, I had ramp jams in a gun that feeds just about anything else including 200 grain LWCs. So I still carry 230 grain Cor Bon. I am going to buy the Taurus hex bullets and handload them seated deeper, but it's a future project

So my firing almost 100 rounds yesterday and not cleaning it will be ok..I dont want to clean it till i go to my friends house and have him show me the proper way "Unless its easy and there is a place online to show me"..I cleaned the outside of the gun just not the inside. On my last pistol "Jennings 9mm" It was easy to take apart and didnt have much to do to work with the inside and i dont shoot it anymore because its unsafe,But im not going to chance something going bad if i take my Ruger apart..I have a Nra course im taking march 13 that will cover cleaning ect..Thanks guys

I wish i could be shooting it now..Infact all i do lately is think about guns..Maybe thats not so healthy...

Here's what you should do with carbon steel guns

Just spray a little WD-40 or silicone lube in the barrel to keep it from rusting. In the short term a stainless steel barrel is not gonna rust.

And what you are experiencing is the unique phenomena of new-found FREEDOM. It is contagious and you will eventually consider it an irreplaceable part of your daily life. But for right now you are simply amazed at what you were missing, and you wanna know more. Study every gun mag, second amendment book and dissertation and forums like this one and absorb as much sage advice as you can. If enough American men take back their endangered manhood and demand freedom, our children might inherit a free America. And we will have quite a thrill returning to our roots....

Have fun and always use safe handling procedures...the life you save may be one dear to you.
