Well, I was thinking the same thing...just bought a used 45-70 guide gun for $350 with 3 boxes ammo. Don't think you can get much cheaper.

Maybe a NEF single shot ($250) and a Simmons scope and mount ($150)?

Mossberg SSi-ONE at Galyan's for $229

Burris Fullfeild II 3x9x40 for $199

So just a few bucks over the limit.

I'm becoming a bit of a nuisance, flogging the same unmoving equine again and again, but I'd have to agree with LeonCarr and Wryfox if I could find anybody around here willing to part with an 1895 for $350. Alas, the best price I've been able to find has been $450. :(

So I'll sit this one out and mope.

Im not a hunter, but im planning on going hunting this spring with my uncle. Im setting up a remington 870, since If I dont like hunting, I can use it for other things. If I do enjoy hunting, im planning on doing a 400 dollar gun project. My BEST hunting rig :) is going to compose of a nef single shot 30-06, with either a simmons scope and mount, or a used leupold if I can find one, with a 9 shot cabelas but cuff and a sling. I fugure Im looking at a shade over 420 or so, and that will allow me to hunt just about anything on the east coast and north america.

NEF Handi Rifle in .30--06 ($212) outfitted with a Leupold Vx-1 2-7($179) should pretty much take any game on the continent . . . with proper bullet placement.

A buddy of mine used a Handi Rifle in 30-06 and leupold 3X9 to get a deer in November. Picked it off at 150-175 yards. Actually blew off a front leg with factory Federal 150's
He bought it less than 1 month before getting that deer. He did have to run about 50-60 rounds through it before the rifle started to group good enough. He is an accomplished deer hunter, just not with that new rifle.

But I'd suggest a Guide Gun, because thats what I use:D

I sorta did what BusMaster007 said. I bought a Mosin-Nagant M38 from Big5 for $90, Darrell's scout mount for $60, and a Simmons 4x pistol scope for $100. Figure it won't make a bad 150 yard gun for Western Washington woods at $250.

In the words of WC Fields "you cut me to the quick"

I would get on Sarco's website and look through either their Husqvarna A.B's or the M96 or M98 rifles. The stuff I liked was:

Husqvarna A.B.- $325 no scope 9.3x57 or 8x57
Husqvarna Lightweight Sporter-$325 no scope 30-06
Husqvarna M96 Sporter-$275 no scope 9.3
Carl Gustav M96-$325 with scope 6.5X55

For the sights get a Lyman 57 peep sight for $60 and a sling for $20.00

If it had to be a "NEW" rifle I guess a Marlin 336 or Winchester 94 which come in just under $400.00, but I think I would just balk before I dropped any dollars down, and wait till I had saved up another $100 which is a easier mark to get into a decent rifle. My last Marlin 336 I paid $35.00 and got a RCBS press thrown into the deal, so I really would choke if I had to pay $400 now.

My vote would be the M-39 Finn for $250 or so, then some boxes of Wolf 200 grain SP ammo at about $6 per twenty. It's very close to the "D" ball the M-39 was calibrated for and hits like a sledge-hammer. Forget the scope. You don't need it. Just learn to use tangent sights.

M38 Mosin Nagant. $60 from Aim Surplus.

Box of 7.62x54R, Wolf soft-points. $5.99

B-Square scope mount. $72.95

LER Pistol Scope. Around $50.

Spend the rest of the money on Cold Ones. :D

I'd go with a "package deal" rifle from Walmart. Sure you get a cheap simmons scope, butyou also get a Savage 110 with a plastic stock in a popular caliber like 270 or 30-06. That's tough to beat.

I've seen similar package deals on Winchester Model 70's 9pushfeed) and i don't care for them.. still, they shoot.

Another vote for NEF.

I'm in a similar situation, but I decided that my budget is going to be $300

I'm going to go for the NEF in .280 (cause it has a longer barrel than the .30-06) and a Bushnell 3-9X40 "Banner" wide angle scope. Now I just need to find the $300...

one idea would be a SMLE sporter from the local gun show, that should be under $150. Then a 22" barrel blank in .411 dia(about $200) chambered and threaded by my buddy in his off time with a little arm twisting in 405 winchester, then polish for bluing(50 to 100) and do the stock work myself and that would come to about $400. there are 300 and 400 grain bullets available and you could use 41 mag bullets for small game loads and vermin. You could also chamber the rifle in 375 winchester or leave it in 303 and have a great little gun and you could stye it after other british SMLE sporting rifles and have a replica of a rifle someone would have taken to India or Africa.

Well, I have a 700ADL Synthetic in 270 along with a Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40 for sale... I'd sell it for $400.

Short of that, I'd probably go for one of the Savage package deals with the Accu Trigger. For general purposes for a new shooter, I'd probably go with a 308. If I had no guns at all and was starting over with such a beast, I'd personally go for one of the short 270 or 300 Magnums and some reloading equipment.

an 8mm mauser-german or yugo(sorry..im hooked on mauser actions).....a scope mount and a good sturdy 6x scope.the ammo is cheap(but its corrosive so you get some windex and clean it better)should be big nuff to shoot most anything.
