What are the best loads on the market for short (3.25") barrel 9mm CCW guns? I know that the Speer 9mm 124 gr. GD SB +P is specifically tailored to short barrels, but what about other on the market? Since cost is a concern, would it be better just get a large quantity of WWB or UMC 115 gr. JHP for functionality/reliability tests and carry the same load in the gun for CCW?

Everyone will probley have a differnt "best" round. In 9mm,I would want something in +p and 147gr's.Hp's of course.

A 147gr HP is fine for a full sized 9mm pistol with a 4" to 5" barrel but in a short barrel 9mm it looses a lot of velocity and is not likely to expand.

I have a shortened Walther P38 (P38k) with a 3" barrel and had the same question. Took the P38K and a unmodified P1 and ran som rounds over chrono to get some idea of what ammo to carry in it. The results where as follows with the chrono at approximately 10' from the muzzle.

Walther P1 with 4.92" barrel

Winchester 147gr JHP's = 949 fps
Hot Shot 124gr FMJ = 1,054 fps
Rem 115gr JHP hand load over 6.0grs of Unque = 1,257 fps

Walther P38k with 2.92" barrel

Winchester 147gr JHP's = 614 fps
Hot Shot 124gr FMJ = 952 fps
Rem 115gr JHP hand load over 6.0grs of Unque = 1,139 fps

The loss of barrel length reduced the 147gr bullets velocity by over 300 fps to a point where any bullet expansion was unlikely while the lighter bullets only lost around 100 fps.

My own choice was to load the pistol with 124gr Winchester Ranger Partition Golds with a factory muzzle velocity of 1,185 fps from a 4" barrel. These should be over 1,000 fps from the P38k at its muzzle and should retain enough velocity to assure expansion.

If I were to go the bulk hollowpoint route, I would do exactly as you have suggested ~ WWB, UMC, or Remington in a 115-grain bullet.

The 9mm doesn't lose as much velocity with shorter barrels as some other cartridges. Any good 115 or 124 grain JHP, standard velocity or +P, should work fine.

I carry an HK P2000SK in 9mm and I use Cor-Bon 115 gr JHP. Out of my full size 9's I like to use heavier loads, but in shorter barrels I think the 115 is the way to go. The more likely it is for your projectile to expand the better.
