Opinion on the Winchester Surpreme 9mm 147 gr. SXT

I have a small cache of Winchester's Supreme 147 gr. SXT 9mm load, purchased for cheap when Gaylan's was bought out by Dick's. I believe it has recently been discontinued in favor of the new bonded civilian loads. I know that Winchester did not release in-house gelatin results since is was not an LE load.

What to people think about it for defensive use? How about short barrel (3.25") CCW?

SXT is what I have for my 17L. At least partial expansion after denim from a G-26 is good performance for a non +p 147 load.

Of course there are hotter 147's out there.

The SXT has never failed to feed fire or extract, they're waterproofed, and they're tops in the accuracy department.

Good stuff. I use it in my 3913. Feeds perfectly and shoots to POA.

It all depends on what you are looking for.

They seem to offer modest expansion (0.46"-0.52") and deep penetration (16.6"-18"+).

I prefer (and carry in my "off-duty" Glock 17) the Hornady 147 gr. TAP "CQ" XTP JHP because it offers moderate expansion (~1.5x caliber) and deep penetration (14"-18") depending on the barrier encountered and would not hesitate to carry it since it is doing pretty much what *I* ask of CQSD duty ammunition but, YMMV.

Others who prefer a faster, more fragile/expansive bullet with somewhat shallower penetration probably won't like it at all.

If it's all that you can find for the meantime, don't lose any sleep over it and get something else (if you object to this particular load) when the opportunity presents itself.

I was kind of surprised that the SXT's shed their jackets.

Just goes to show that one person's test can yield completely different results than the next guys...
