Best mag style for competion? (1911)

I got a 1911 .45 fullsize for Christmas and took it to a action pistol match Sun. and have a couple mag questions. I got there too late to shoot but got to shoot 4 COF's while I was there but had some mag problems. I was using the S.O.'s 8 round Metalform extended with the round follower and they didn't want to lock in with the slide closed. They worked great from slidelock, so I was wondering if the round follower could be the problem as my 7 round flat follower mags don't give me any problems at all with my slide closed. Thanks for any info as I'm looking to buy 6-7 8 round mags for competion at the end of the month and was wondering what my best option would be.
 
Exactly what competition where you shooting in? USPSA Singlestack or Limited-10 division? IDPA? Something else?

If you are limited to flush-fitting magazines, I'd suggest the CMC 8-round PowerMag. If you can run 10-round magazines, try the CMC 10-round PowerMag.

Same here, CMC PowerMags. I have quite a few of them in 8 and 10 round sizes and they work great.
 
For USPSA Limited-10 in singlestack 45 autos, wilson 10 round mags seem to be the leading favorite by a large margin. I have 4 or 5 and they have always worked well. I've used Shooting Star mags (made by CMC) and recently CMC powermags for flush fitting 8 rounders; they all work well also.
 
I have a couple of those Metalform X-tended 8-round magazines with round follower and plenty of spring. One of them worked fine, the other was difficult to seat under a closed slide. I took them apart and compared the internals and the troublesome one had about 1/8" longer follower legs. I cut it to match the other and had no further difficulty.

The Tripp Cobramags have a good reputation, but are more expensive than McCormick.
 
Don't forget USPSA has the provisional single stack division this year. The 8 rounders would work there.
 
Best mag ?

For the money is CMc power mag's or metalforms. 8 or 10 rd, notice I said for the money, as can be bought for around $20. This was at Briar Rabbit w/Squibb I'm assuming? Every shooter has a preference and a opinion on mag's, bullets, guns. Reason mag wouldn't lock was fully compreesed spring, some mag's new required the spring to take a set to work, as mentioned earlier follower may cause some grief. I'm the white haired old dude that shot two stages strong hand only on Squibb's squad.

If you guys at Briar Rabbit refer to Nick as Squibb, then yessiree! That was the first time I've shot anything like that and it was definitley fun! I just started pistol shooting last spring and Nick was trying to get me over there last year and being a newbie I felt like I wasn't ready, glad I seen him at our home club and found out about that match, I will shoot some matches this year! I'm looking at the Metalform 10 round mags, hoping there will be another group buy when my allowance comes in next month (income tax) . Thanks for the info and hope to see you at some matches this year.
 
For IDPA matches, what magazines should I be buying?

New to the matches, only competed in SSP/un with my Sig p228 so far. I'd like to try my 1911 soon, a stock 5" Kimber Custom CDPII.

CMC Power Mags seems more reasonably priced than the Wilsons, do 8rds or 10rds make more sense for local IDPA matches?

I assume 8rd Wilson mags w/o bumpers will be my carry magazines.
 
You can't use 10 rounders in IDPA in CDP class, you need the 8 rounders. I like McCormick mags, but since your CDP has an aluminum fram you should use the Wilson mags with plastic followers. The metal followers can ding away at the frame after a while on the aluminum guns.
