Greetings,

I have a CZ-85B (1994 production) that I bought NIB in 1999. Since its was the middle of the Clinton ban era, the pistol came with one 10 round magazine. Being a supposed smart guy, I purchased five 15 round Pro-Mags from CDNN during the same year. The Pro-Mags worked good for a while, but they seem to now cause the slide to lock back even with rounds remaining in the mag. I am still function testing the orignal mag, but it seems to be that the problem is tied to the Pro-Mags.

Who makes the best aftermarket mags for these pistols?

The CZ-USA website lists factory mags for every other modern CZ gun except the 9mm 75/85 series (sold out?), and did not reply to my email questions.

I have seen MecGar 16 round mags available. How are they?

Thanks,

Hunter

From what I have read, Mec-Gar now makes the factory mags, but I'm not sure who made them in '94. I bought (2) 16 round factory mags (not marked as Mec-Gar, I don't know if that means they aren't) from CDNN a couple of years ago, and they work great. Mec-Gar seems to have a great reputation, where as I have heard varying things about Pro-Mag. If I were to get new mags today, I'd go with Mec-Gar or factory, depending on which is cheapest. Have you switched ammo recently? I had to file the slide stop some on my 85B (WWB JHP was bumping it and locking slide back early), was wondering if that may be the cause.

I don't have my CZ yet (it should come in tomorrow) but when I ordered my CZ SP-01 I also ordered 5 of the CZ 75/85 16rd 9mm magazines with it.

Anyways it was $37 at http://www.ghostholster.com

Since the above mentioned ammo, my CZ has the new slide stop that they sell, apparently Angus (the owner and competition shooter) highly recommends it. It comes as part of the package of my custom gun.

Hunter,
You're a mech engineer. Have you tried to compare the suspect magazine's spring tension compared to the good ones you have? Could be that the springs have just relaxed over the years.

Mag Spring Issue

I kept the Pro-Mags loaded for an extended period of time. The springs do seem weaker than they used to be. How would this cause the slide stop to activate?

You don't WANT after-market mags for CZ B-models when you can buy Mec-Gar (the company that now makes the factory mags) for around $20 from CDNN.

Factory Mec-Gar mags and Mec-Gar mags are slightly different, but both should work well in the newer CZ (i.e. not pre-B models.)

The Pro-Mags, if they fit well, can be rejuvenated by buying some Wolff extra-strength mag springs. (They are known for weak springs.) Go to www.gunsprings.com and look for the CZ/EAA mag springs.

For a B

Go MecGar. My experience is that they have stronger springs than CZ factory mags, even though, as Walt says, they make the CZ mags.
