Best of the Budget Bolt 308's?

A23fter you decide on a rifle, take a few minutes and check out www.texasboars.com and look at the anatomy of a hog. If you shoot them like you do a deer it can lead to an unrewarding experience. I know from experience. Where I shoot hogs there are lots of swamps, so lots of hogs, we need to hit them in the central nervous system and put them down right where they are. A behind the front leg shot like we do on deer won't get you that result. Hogs a built different and can disappear into those swamps. Head shots are best, and I see a lot of guys doing that every year with .223's but I prefer something bigger too, but have done it with .223's. Be careful it can be very addictive, my bunch all started with bolt guns, we now all shoot semi-autos. Our hosts are all about body counts and as many dead hogs as possible. Good luck.

Thanks, I'll definitely have to look at that re: anatomy. My father in law and I were thinking of having me with a bolt 308 and him with is AR in case anything got uncomfortably close, but it'll be awhile before we go so that might change. He kind of wants a 30-06, and this gives him a good opportunity to convince my mother in law he needs one.

I may end up spending more, just depends on how well funding comes together. When I bought my 1911, I was planning on an RIA Tactical, but I ended up with some extra money and ended up with a Springfield Loaded. If that ends up happening, I'll probably lean towards one of the nicer Savages or T/C rifles, or maybe a Howa or Weatherby. If I can afford a nicer rifle that'd be awesome, I just don't need a really tricked out expensive rifle when its going to be used a couple times a year at most.

If you are fiscally restrained, I wouldn’t get hung up on caliber unless there’s some overwhelming reason for a particular one. Anything .243 and up should work, though given the choice I’d gravitate to .264 or larger.

And I’d REALLY look over the used gun racks. Probably 75% of the guns I’ve had in my life have been pre-owned, many never fired.

I sold a .308 Savage 110 that shot 1” for $200, and it was in nice shape

I'm definitely keeping an eye out. Unfortunately in my area used guns tend to demand near new prices so I've always just bought new.

If you're ever looking to sell another $200 Savage, hit me up!

Apologies for bringing a thread back from the dead

It’s your thread amigo, bumping is yours and yours alone!

It’s really nice when OP’s come back in and report on what they finally decided - so many threads kinda go unresolved for us readers.

Personally, I did forget to answer the second half of the original question when I responded the first time. I’ve killed hundreds of hogs over they years with a 223/5.56, many with 50 V-max’s. Just a matter of placement. A 60 Partition is quite likely the best hog bullet for 223/5.56, but only for those “less than ideal” shot angles. But the money has already been spent, so the point is moot, I get that.

savage 10 fcp new for 379 sounds like you did good , I have 2 savage 10 models and they have done me good

Apologies for bringing a thread back from the dead, but wanted to share that this is what I ended up ordering today. Over budget, but the deal seemed too good to pass up at $379.99.

Hmmm, 8.9 lbs without a scope. Hope you aren't planning on walking a lot...
It should be really accurate off the bench, though. I sure l like my Savage 10T, as long as I just have to pack it from the truck to the firing line.

Nah, we won't be doing any stalking or anything. I expect to be mostly stationary. I have a Savage Mark II FV that's pretty similar in weight since dropping it into a Boyd's stock and I don't really mind it for squirrel hunting.
