Best place to find a "Hartford" Argentine Colt 1911

I'm new to 1911 variants . I am trying to find a blued version of the Colt made 1911 pistol that was a contract pistol for Argentina (at a decent price). About 10K were made. After that the Argentinians made them under license and supervision from Colt (Sistema Modelo 1927).

I have seen them advertised as a "Hartford" Colt 1911.

They are listed at www.cruffler.com/JLD.html at $395 I think(been awhile since I checked). I cannot give any imput as to what their inventory is like. Thought about ordering an Argentina bult version(Sistema), but am getting a more modern Colt at the moment.

I believe that the model CrazyIrishman is talking about is the first run of these pistols made by Colt. IIRC (I can't find my references right now) this first edition was a copy of the 1911 while the Sistema most of us talk about is a copy of the 1911A1. I have two of the Sistemas myself and they are nice pistols.

You are correct about the Colt 1911 that I'm looking for. From what little I have been able to find out the first run of 1911 type pistols were marked for the different Argentine government agencies on one side of the slide AND also had the Colt Pony on the other side. Roughly ten thousand pistols were sent to Argentina.

The Sistema Modelo 1927's were made entirely in Argentina. The "Hartford Colt" was made entirely in the U.S. Both pistols are made to the identical blueprints and are interchangeable.

OTOH,the Ballester Molina pistols have very few parts that interchange. I think the magazine and barrel will work.


I saw an ad today for a Hartford Colt that was just shy of two-thousand bucks!! He should stop drinking Hoppes #9!!

While I would like to agree with you it seems that prices on desireable guns (like these) have gone out of sight.

I strongly recommend the Sistema as a low-priced but high quality subsitute if you can't find a Hartford momdel you can afford.

JLD hasn't had any Sistemas for a long time and I don't know if they ever had any Hartford Colts. That Cruffler site has been dead for two years.

I saw an ad (a current one) of a guy that had a Hartford Colt for sale at 550.00!! Thats a far cry from 2K don't ya think?

Last year JLD did have Sistema' and Hartford Colts. According to the guy I spoke to the Hartford Colts were sold out in January or February yet they still kept the picture on their website like they were in stock.

Same thing happened with the Sistemas. I had called JLD a couple times a month for about five months and I kept getting the answer,"they should be here any day now" (this reminds me about "the check is in the mail a little bit)! The last time I called JLD said they were completely out. After this I saw them on "Cruffler" being listed for sale. I don't really know what to believe!


I'm going to keep trying to find the "right" one! I know its out there.

Regarding C&R eligibility,does anyone know how much you can modify a C&R pistol before it loses eligibility? Which ever variant I get I would like to put a new barrel in it(but still keep the original),a decent trigger, and a commander style hammer.

I've heard that as it relates to C&R rifles you are not allowed to alter them unless it could be changed back "quickly". For instance,suppose you put a sporter stock on your Mauser.That wouldn't be a big deal plus its quick to change back.OTOH,having a sporter barrel installed is a different story.

If anyone knows the limitations (if any)please LMK.

If that's a real Hartford Colt and it's in almost any shape at all, buy it!

I see them on gun Broker .com for 600-900 same as most other auction sites. I got my Hartford argie for $535 all up a couple years ago. They are good deals as other commercial 1911's of the same vintage are 2-3X as much!

I think you can do pretty much anything you want with a C&R pistol or rifle as long as you follow the laws regarding other weapons such as "no full auto conversions". Of course C&R's are preban weapons so the AWB restrictions shouldn't apply. Some people will say differently and site the importation issue, but I don't believe that. However if you modify your rifle then it's no longer C&R eligable until you put it back the way it originally was.
