sup THR, I've done done a search and only found old posts on this:

what the consensus is on the best plinking ammo? what do u guys shoot for plinking and what for self defense??

Thanks

WWB or Federal from Walmart these days. They are the cheapest brass cased ammo you can find these days. You can spend a lot more and not noticed better performance IMHO.

Same ammo I use for range practice.

I get all my range/plinking ammo from www.mastercast.net

I carry the 158gr +P Remington LHP's in my .38's, Doubletap 158gr gold dots in my .357's and Fiocchi JHP's in my .40 and .45 and Doubletap 147gr gold dots in my 9mm's.

For general plinking and indoor (non-competitive) target shooting there's not a speck of difference. Buy whatever is cheap and on sale. Unless you have money to burn it's foolish to plink around with Hornady or Cor-Bon when CCI or Federal works just as well at a fraction of the cost.

CCI Blazer (yes, aluminum case ) is the cheapest by far, but seemingly harder to find....that leaves you with Wal-Mart.....Natchez used to beat Wal-mart, but they joined the rest of the majority of dealers with "GOUGING", so they are now about 50% higher...

I also purchase the cheapest at Wally World, when it's available. I talked to the clerk today and he mentioned that Federal is what's coming in replacing Blazer Brass. Same price; no price hike...and damn: no .380 in sight.....:banghead:

Between 9's and 45's, I've shot at least 10,000 rounds of Winchester White Box. Everyone has gone bang. There were only 2 rounds of of 10,000 that looked dented. It's great stuff and a great price. Given current ammo shortages, I shoot just about whatever I can get and they have all worked fine as well for plinking.

Federal owns CCI it is the same ammo different box.

I like Monarch from Academy. Its cheap, clean, new brass, and made by Prvi Partisan out of Serbia.

I have found the federal ammo from wally world to be good. the monarch someone mentioned is also a good performer.

If you have an Academy near you, Monarch is good stuff. They have it in steel case or brass. Walmart carries Federal, WWB, and CCI blazer in aluminum or brass. All are good plinking ammo. Some gun store will have Magtech or Independence ammo priced low. It's good too.

I tried Wal-Mart's Federal in both 9 mil and .45. The 9 mil was fine with lighter recoil than other 9s but the .45 in Federal kept throwing unburnt powder on my arms. By 35 rounds my arms was more of a mess than when I go through 150 rounds of WWB. I ordered bulk Remington UMC to try it out. What's your guys opinion on it?? This stuff seems more difficult to find than WWB, CCI, and Federal here.

For defense I choose Black Hills 115gr +P jhp or Corbon's 115 +P jhp if I can afford it. For indoor i go with Speer Gold Dot 124gr.

I can't find any 9mm ammo at any local walmarts (all 9 of them!) Does anyone know how much Federal or WWB costs at walmart usually? I might try and see if they can hold me some when an order comes in. My local gun shop has Federal for $13 a box of 50. Is walmart still cheaper?

Thanks for the info. The 10th walmart I called had 200 rounds of whitebox and 100 of Remington for just $2 more than the WWB. Still saved $16 on 300 rounds over my local gun shop.

It's tough to beat the range performance or price of Winchester White Box, IMO. I've run many many thousands of rounds through many guns through the years and have never once experienced a problem with so much as a single cartridge.
