Ok. I'm looking to get a .308 and need some input on what brand. I have $1,000 to spend and really like the Kimber 84M but I'm sure there are some just as good and also cheaper in price. I have looked at Remington and Winchester websites and did not find anything that really apealed to me. I know this question has been ask a billion times probably. Be using on deer and elk nothing bigger.

The one if a problem rises who stands behind and honors their warranty wanting to have a happy customer..... some say it but doing it is another matter...

$1000 to spend for just the rifle, or is that the whole ball o' wax including scope/mounts?

Remington, don't know about their customer service, but that's because I've never had a problem, very accurate and huge aftermathet support makes it rise above the competition, aulthogh Savage, I belive is good in that area are good too.

Remington 700 is a good choise for .308, or any caliber for that matter, I also want one in 30-06 also.

Take a look at CZ. I have one of their rimfire rifles, and its sexy. You will find a lot of happy CZ owners out there I think, I've handled some of their full size centerfire rifles but haven't tried them out. Excellent reputation, and in your price range.

Err scratch that, buy something made in USA =)

While I have four Kimbers now to use instead of my heavier pre 64 M70's I would admit that the Ruger 77 has many of the good features that I demand in a hunting rifle.

These are a three position safety that also preferably locks the firing pin, CRF, a well attached bolt handle, a mauser type extractor and being made in the USA is good as well.

kyarcher,

your gonna get a bunch of different answers and they will all be correct...for the person that is giving the advice or tips.

Me? I prefer a good Browning or Winchester...they shoulder up perfect for me it seems. I have also shot a few 700 BDL and CDL rifles...they have shot just as good and the bolts were a bit smoother than the Winchester, but not as much as the Browning. I have a Savage and like the way it is customizable and it shoots just as fine as the others.

Bottom line is...any rifle can do for you...the prices are reasonable enough that you can go somewhere and find a rifle, mount and ring set and scope and be at that number or less.

If you have a gander mountain or cabela's around where you are, or if you are familiar enough with a gun-shop near you, go and pick up the rifle...shoulder it...see how it feels...that is the big part right there...if you are comfortable with it.

Calibers? if you are looking for deer and elk only, then I would suggest a 308, 30-06 or 270. Magnums are neat, but I wouldn't bother with them with just those two goals for you. Plus those calibers will harvest piggies and if you start reloading then you can do all kinds of things with any of those three calibers.

Hope this helps a bit.

I'd pick the Kimber if I cared a lot about keeping the weight down. If not so much I'd go with a Savage confident that I could always find something to spend the change from that 1000 on :)

Mauchester, Remage, Rugage, Ruchester, Savington. They are all good!!!!!

Amazing work that!:D

I personally like Savage, but for what you want, any of the more popular rifles will do. Actually, any reliable, semi-accurate rifle will do.

I'm a Savage fan, but as long as you buy from one of the major manufacturers listed here you're going to get a good gun. Every manufacturer puts out a lemon now and then, but the law of averages is heavily in your favor. If I were you I'd buy something you think looks nice and feels good.

People like to talk about how quality was better back in the day, and I'll agree old rifles show a level of craftsmanship you just don't see any more. But if it's pure accuracy you're after we're living in the golden age right now.

I like a Browning A-Bolt in that price range because it fits me and has a good fit/finish and features. But don't buy it because I recommended it, try before you buy. At least shoulder it, because what fits me likely will not fit you.

Tikka T3 is a nice rifle as well. But like said before, a lot of them will work for what you want. Weatherby makes a really nice looking rifle as well. It is probably best to do as mentioned before, go look at and shoulder as many as you can. Don't base your decision on what things look like on the internet. Pictures can be and are deceiving.

Buy the Kimber, you won't be disappointed. $1000 seems like a lot of money for a gun but it is 2X the gun that some of the others are that cost $700-$800.

Thanks all for your suggestions. Like some of you said I will go to my local gunstore and see what fits me the best.
I really like the look of CZ's...:)

Good idea, and CZ makes a fine weapon also. I don't believe I have heard a bad suggestion here. Several that don't fit me well or that I don't like the looks of; but that is very subjective. Take your time buying, but let us know what you end up with.

Well I went to three gunshops in Lexington and neither had any Brownings, CZ's, Savage's or really anything in
308 cal. in stock. :mad::mad::mad:
