I want too put some glass on my new Savage 16fss 270WSM.
My budget is $300.
I will be hunting in Big timber and farmland, with shots ranging from
20 - 400 yards.
I have been looking at Leupolds vx-II and Weavers Grand Slam.
All opinions welcome.

Tasco Super Sniper at riflescopes.com. Excellent glass and solid construction. Don't let the Tasco name worry you, these aren't your typical cheap scopes.

When I finally decided to get a really good scope I picked up a Bausch and Lomb 3200 Elite.

My next was a Leupold scout scope.

You buy a top quality scope with a lifetime warranty and you will never regret it. Tasco is ok, but its like a chevy next to a mercedes. Truth is there is no comparison and the glass ain't even close.

Sign me new scope snob.

Burris Man myself

Burris Signature series. The old Signature line has been replaced by the "Signature Select" Line. The old Signatures are still around on shelves, and they are right around $300. $330-350 gets you the new Signature select. This is great glass from a great company. I have converted a few Leupold guys by letting them look through my Burris Signature scopes. Don't mess with the posi-lock feature, I have never used or needed mine.

Scoping your Savage

You'd be hard pressed to find a better scope for the money than the Weaver Grand Slam. That's what sits atop my Ruger77 in .270 Win..I have purposefully set up each of my rifles with a different scope to be able to see and show the differences. So far I have :Weaver Grand Slam,Leupold VX2,Nikon Monarch,Redfield Golden Five Star,& Burris Signature. They are all very good but I'm partial to the Weaver.

That's a pretty good spectrum of scopes you have Kimbernut. Do you mean the Weaver is optically better or maybe features, price, etc? I will be needing a nice low power variable soon and am looking for direct comparisons between the Weaver, Leupold, and Burris.
Thanks, Griz

Got a weaver on my 300wm, hans't came apart yet, right there w/ a VXII for clarity and mine has smother adjustment right than my VX. Half the cost, I love it

Thanks for the input.
I am going to wait till right after Christmas to see if i can get one at a discount. :D

IMHO -the Weaver and Burris are equal in clarity. To get the clarity of those two in the Leupold you will have to go to the VX111.The clincher for me(old eyes)in the Weaver is the fast focus ,the power markings facing rearward and the grip of the power changing ring.

Thanks for the info. Judging by your name I will guess this might be of interest. My plan is to put it (probably the 1.5 X 5 Weaver it sounds like) on a 308 Kimber. Sort of a general purpose rifle like the scout, but with a regular scope. If you want you can insert the cliche about old dogs-new tricks. Now I have to decide on the wood stock or the lighter synthetic.

Thanks again, Griz
