I'll be getting .223 rifle soon (still debating which) but I'm hoping to put something around a 1-4x scope on it. Any recommendations for a quality/well built 1-4x that's lightweight, has good low light visibility, and under $300? So far here's what I've come across:

Leupold VX-I or II 1-4x (other than price what's the difference ?)
Nikon Monarch African 1-4x20mm
Nikon 1.65-5x36 BTR
Weaver Grandslam 1.5-5x32

Are there any quality illuminated reticles for under $300?

I have the Nikon Monarch 1.5-4.5x20, but it's not the African model and is marketed as a "shotgun" scope. I believe that is due to its parallax being set closer than 100 yards. I have it on a 44 carbine and it's small size and low power keep the rifle "handy". I paid just under $200 and like it. But I don't think it's as good as a Leupold 3 series.

It would be news to me if there is a quality scope available for under $300 that is illuminated. I take that back. Bushnell offers the "firefly" line which will be under your budget I believe. I bought and sold one of these (3200), but wasn't thrilled with the glass quality, but it certainly was acceptable. The firefly has a pretty bold reticle that would be good for hunting but probably not appreciated for target shooting. The reticle is charged with a flashlight for ten minutes before use.

The differences in Leupold ones, twos and threes is coatings and glass quality. Personally, I don't find anything remarkable about the ones and twos (for the money), but I find the threes to be exceptionally good, even the older Vari-X III's.

Well Art,the old Vari-X III's are todays VX-II's,according to Leupold.
In all honesty it's getting harder to find true quality scopes that dont resemble the Hubblle telescope project in power ranges that the original poster mentioned.
But Leupold,Nikon, and few others fortunately do offer these still.
Unfortunately too many are weighty compared to Leupold who somehow seems to be able to make a scope short in length, great in eye relief, and relatively light in weight compared to it's competitors.

The nikon is a solid classic. Very nice eye relief. I have one.
But if you are in a budget and want something a tad different I have 5 systems with the little 2-7 burris timberline. Allows me to shoot both eyes open adn then I can make consistent hits with both nato 223 and 308 as far as those rounds effectively go.
I like this one to be very small and light and amazing site and the burris drop comp tracks really well.

Well,I too own a Burris Timberline 2x7x26 1stmarine,and have it mounted on my Marlin 336 in 30-30.
Damn shame Burris discontinued this fine scope.
It was PERFECT for carbine length rifles and offered generous eye relief, great clarity, short in length, and lightweight.
Better yet on a long range rifle like the .223 it could be cranked up to 7 power.
Lovely.
If one googles around this discontinued scope can still be found here and there.

I bought 7 of them bulk at $145 or something like that each.
It is so small but so nice lenses that don't know why discontinued.
It is one oft those best kept secrets, you know. It is not the awesomets of all things but it is so light and so functional that it wants to go with all the ARs and AKs and really whatever. I like light scopes and good glass. of course Burris full lifetime warranty something should go wrong.
Thanks.

Seven!!.....Wow......If for some happenstance you ever feel you want to jettison one of those 2x7's shoot me a P.M. please.

Yes! why not? I liked them for all the "Go" guns with some exceptions so I have some with combo of red dot at 1 o'clock and the little 2x7. all very effective and ligth carry. I actually shoot drills with them. All gas piston systems. truly go guns.

Up your budget just a bit and grab a vortex pst 1-4

I was in that budget too...decided to save up a bit more and get the PST....I got it through Scott at Liberty Optics...If you mention you are a THR member he will give you 10% off your purchase and also free shipping...awesome scope and definitely the best buy for your money....only downside is everybody's finding out about them and they are a bugger to get without a bit of a wait. I say if you can hold off the Vortex is worth waiting for.

Sometimes by pictures alone it's hard to see just how compact these neat little Burris Timberlines truely are.
I have no way of putting forth a picture of mine mounted on my Marlin 336 on a Weaver 63B base with Millett low rings but one look at the package would quickly make one aware of how over sized most scopes of choice are on carbine type rifles.
Light and short is right on a carbine type of rifle.
Again, too bad Burris dropped this line of fine scopes.

It is abaut half of the weight of the average scope with better performance.
Of all the ones I have, even the big boys, I think these ones give the better overall value for carbine specially small footprint amazing versatility 2-7!!
