I have a Belarussian PK-AS that I absolutely LOVE. check out
www.freedomoptics.com and
http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/pkas.html
The PK-AS runs about $200, has the mount built in and keeps its zero after unmounting and remounting. The optic runs on a typical watch battery, and the reticle is a circle, with a 1 MOA dot in the middle. Even with the power off, the dot still shows up black. It has variable illuminaton. The outer circle of the reticle is not illuminated, just black.
The sight sits left of center-bore. I thought this might be weird, but after getting it mounted and trying it out, its not.. it works great as a both-eyes-open, fast target acquisition sight, and the 1 MOA dot works great for longer range shooting, as it wont cover up your target.
check out the ak-47 forums at

Zeroing it was slightly tedious, as you have to unmount it each time to make an adjustment to windage, but once I got it dialed in, its perfect, and has an easily adjustbale elevation knob that you can change on the fly for different distances.
heres my SAR-1 with the PK-AS
