I got a Remington model 700 sps SS .270 for christmas and was wondering what kind of scope i need to get. My maximum price is $300. I will be hunting whitetail deer in a shooting lane.

I will probably be shooting to about 250 yds. The $300 budget is with rings/mount, too.

I would get a Nikon Buckmasters Scope. They are high quailty and fit within your price range. I think that they beat Leupold scopes within the same price range.

This is a recurring question - a search of this forum could turn up a goldmine of good info for you.

For $300, the Sightron SII or Leupold VXII can't be beat in overall value. Nikon glass may look a litle better than the VXII, but the Nikon isn't nearly as robust in tube thickness, etc.

What kind of ranges do you usually have on those deer?

For deer hunting, a variable power scope in the 3x-9x range, or the 4x-12x range, is about perfect. An objective lens of 40mm diameter is good. Some guys like a 50mm lens because it gives them a brighter image - you probably don't need it (and the extra cost) and it makes mounting a little harder (need taller rings).

Sightron, Leupold, Bushnell, and Nikon all make scopes that meet those criteria, but the best value (IMO) is the Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40mm model. They come with a variety of reticles (just as the other scopes do) but I'm fond of the Ballistic-Plex reticle... with that .270 shooting a 150 grain bullet at 2850 fps, you would sight in the center crosshair for 100 yard targets, and that would put the first "tick mark" on the cross hair right on the money for a 200 yard target. The next tick mark down would be a scant inch below your aim point for a 300 yard target, etc.

A good place to buy them at a decent price is here:

If you like the Bushnells, go for something in the Elite 3200 or the Elite 4200 series. If you like the Leupold, the VX-II or the (more expensive) VX-III series are what you are after.

I'll second the Sightron and add Burris 3-9 fullfield II...great scopes and will fall just under and well under your budget

I have Leupold scopes on my hunting rifles...

But I bought a used Nikon Buckmaster right here on THR for my son's .243. Appears just as bright as my Leupolds. People I've talked to say they're quite durable.

Keep and eye out on THR, EvilBay or your local Pawn Shop for a used scope that carries a good Lifetime warrantee.

I had a Simmons scope on a Magnum rifle.. It got dropped hard on a rock. One of the lens's inside came loose. I sent that five year old scope back to Simmons for repair. They sent me a brand new newer model scope of same grade for my $20 shipping/service fee.

I know a guy that had an old.. I mean 'Old', wire cross haired Leupold that one of the cross hairs had broken in. He stopped in at Leupold in Oregon to drop it for repair. Ten minutes later he was handed a new VXIII in the same power. Now that's service!

Sounds like you got a great rifle! I remember you posting about .308, .270wsm, or .300wsm a while back. Glad to see you got the .270Win, you will be very happy with this caliber and gun.

Does that $300 budget include rings/mounts, or just scope?

If it does include the rings/mounts, the absolute best you can do for that rifle, in my opinion, is get a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40. I put one on my Remington ADL .270Win and love it.

It's $198 from SWFA, and you get a pair of Burris binoculars free along with it. http://www.swfa.com/showproduct.aspx?sku=200162BIN

Then, get yourself a pair of Talley lightweight 1pc mounts for $39.95.

I have this exact setup on my ADL and it is sweet to say the least.

If that $300 budget of yours does not include rings, then I'd probably get a Leupold VXII 3-9x40 from SWFA for $299, or a Nikon Monarch UCC 3-9x40 for $250 or so, and then go with the same Talley rings.

Good luck.

Take a look at the Weaver Grand Slam series. They are in my opinion just as high in build quality and optic clarity as most of the much more expensive domestic and european scopes and much cheaper to boot.

Natchez shooter's Supplies has got some of them on sale right now for good prices.

I hope you find what you're looking for. Take care. Heath
