I have just joined our gun club pistol team. I've got a Buckmark II .22 & Glock 19 9mm. I am allowed to use any sights/scope that does not project a beam (i.e. laser sights).
Suggestions for a red dot or similar for the Glock 19? Its 3rd Generation. Looking to improve my scores but would prefer not spending more than the Glock is worth! If I get serious about the team I can upgrade!

A lot of the 1911 guys with race guns use the reflex style C-more red dots. The 1911 bullseye guys tend to use the tube-style Ultradot red dots. I have ultradots on my 22 pistols and on my 1911 and I am very happy with them. The dot is a big improvement over open sights if you can use one, and especially if you have any trouble with focusing your eyes. Traditional sights are much more practical if you are training for SD/HD, but the dots are great for adding points to your scores. There are also a new generation of smaller reflex sights like the Burris that mount on the rear sight notch that are pretty good.

Get the small Optima red dot or similar. Much smaller than any tube sight and mounts into the rear sight dovetail.

Most of the 'fast' guys in my club run dawson precision front fiberoptic sights and either stock rear or warren/sevigny rear. FWIW. In "open" division, C-more or mini-red dots are the norm.

I don't know what kind of competition you're doing but my personal preference for bullseye or silhouette was just plain old black the blacker the better. I used to carry a can of sight black and I'd spray the sights with before a match. I could see having something bright being very useful for IPSC or self defense where you need to pick up the front blade in particular very quickly but for precision shooting the bright sights complicate things and distract me.

Scott Warren makes the best sights for competition. His Sevigny or Tactical sights are tough and finel machined. They're also cheaper than most anything out there!

Oh, David. I've seen a guy with a G19 run a plate rack at 75 yards 3 times before he missed a shot. 19 consectuive hits on an 8" plate--will it shoot bullseye? Nah. Is it better than a bullseye gun for IDPA or USPSA--YAH!

The red dot sights aren't legal in IDPA. In USPSA, a red dot puts it in the Open Division where it'll get chewed up and spit out by the "real" Open guns. For example, they'd clear more than 3 of those 75yd plate racks and do it in 1/2 the time.

A G19 is a great carry/defense gun and can do very well in good hands in both IDPA and USPSA in an appropriate division. Sights best suited for those venues would be the Warren/Sevigny or the Heinie rear sight coupled with a Dawson fiber front. For defense only, Trijicon deserves a look....and even a mini red dot works, too.
