For some time I've been interested in learning more about doing 1911 gunsmithing work. One of these days I may get the nerve up to buy an inexpensive 1911 like a used Springfield GI, and give it a try. I'm interested to hear from people that have tried this.
I would like to learn how to do things like trigger jobs, throating, ramp jobs, fit beavertail safeties, extended safeties, frame stippling, bobbing hammers, fitting barrel bushings, etc.
Is there a good source for information like books, or videos that anyone would recommend? What types of tools are needed? Is it impossible to do this kind of work without access to a machine shop? Thanks.
