I've been thinking about getting a lot of custom work down on my HiPower.

I want to get the top flattened and serrated, french borders, stipple the front and back strap, beavertail, Heinie Slant Pros, trigger job, Type II hammer, wide combat trigger, re-chromed. Maybe tighten the slide and fit a match barrel.

What is the typical wait time for something like this? And do most gunsmiths want the money all up front or are they flexible?

Most I've heard is 50% deposit.

As for time... depends on the 'smith, how many jobs they've got lined up at the time, and so forth. You've got to ask 'em.

I agree with PCRCCW - call Novaks or Cylinder & Slide; they both have first-class reputations for working on the Hi-Power. I had a Colt Delta Elite that Novaks fully customized for me, but like a fool I sold it to an FBI guy that collected 10mm's. I recall waiting about 4 or 5 months for the Delta Elite to come back from Novaks, and I've heard there are similar delays from Cylinder & Slide. Don't expect the work to be cheap, and plan to pay 50% or more up front.
