I own 3 1911's: a Springfield Armory milspec parkerized gun I bought in 1988, a Sistema Colt and a Para LDA. The Sistema was just mentioned to be complete because it's a junker, and The Para has a ramped barrel. I bought a Clark 460 Rowland conversion kit and have been running it in the SA because it's the only real option of my three guns.

The problem is that I carry the gun in bear country on multi-day backpacking trips and IWB is the best carry method for me. I sweat like a pig and a carbon steel gun suffers mightily after being in my pants for a few days. So I'm seriously considering picking up a stainless gun just to serve as my Rowland platform. Plus, it's a convenient excuse to buy a new gun. :)

In the $500><$1000 category the available players seem to be SA, S&W, Ruger and maybe Kimber or Sig. Ruger seems to be the cheapest, with the SA milspec the next up the rung. The Ruger has the advantage of a beavertail and ambi safety, but the SA is forged instead of cast. Given the significant recoil energy of the Rowland I worry about the durability of a cast frame, but I like the idea of getting the upgrades for slightly less than the plain Jane SA.

So the question is: what <$1000 stainless gun would you choose for a 460 Rowland conversion and why?

TIA
