Hello

Need help with picking a gun.

What is the best target .22 I can get for $400 dollars?

Any input will be greatly appreciated

Thanks :)

Smith & wesson K-22 or model 17, by far. They were used for bullseye before the newer autos.

If you want a standard looking pistol, I'd go Ruger M II 5.5 inch, bull barrel. Well balanced, adjustable sights and many aftermarket parts to make it better if you want.

If you want a dedicated target pistol, the Baikal IZH-35 is in you price range.

You want accurate, get an Olympic-style gun. Coming from the airgun-side of things, I can say for certain that ergonomics matters, and field guns (like the Mk II and 41) just don't got it.

I just ordered an EAA IZH35M--it is commonly listing for about $425 US.
It doesn't appear on the pages linked above; it may be newer than the pages--as they do list the Browning Buckmark pistol. It is rather interesting to see what's on the low-end price range of that list....

I agree that the Rugers "just don't get it". The 22/45 is the only one even CLOSE to being a reasonably user friendly gun, but then you still have to deal with mediocre reliability and miserable stripping for cleaning. I have not seen a Ruger that was not at least "good" in the accuracy department, they do stack bullets if you can do your part.

The Buckmark is BY FAR the best 22 out there under $400 regardless of action type. Best ergonomics, best sights, best reliability and best accuracy. They are DEAD CHEAP when you have had one for a while, you get a ton of gun for the money.

Will this gun see use in competition? It'll make a small difference to my answer.

Generally, I'd say get a MkII Ruger, stainless if possible. I don't like the heavy bull barrels, they throw off the balance of the gun without doing a thing to improve accuracy.* I regularly shoot 50-yard sub-1" groups off a rest with my standard barrel MkII.

I've never had any reliability problems with the MkII, save a few that belonged to my gun club and were cleaned once a year, if that. The same club, by the by, had a couple of Buckmarks that were horrid in the reliability department, even when clean.**

For a dedicated target gun, get a Baikal IZH-35M. Guy in the Metro Pistol Leauge shoots regular Master scores with his (something I can't even do with my Pardini.***) For accuracy on the cheap, the Baikal is the way to go.

* - Some really strong people might not be bothered by the heavy barrel; I personally can't stand the things. If it doesn't bother you, go for it, but I wouldn't pay extra for one.

** - They would shoot themselves loose, starting at the topstrap screw. Very annoying.

*** - Yet...

Thank you for all of your replays

Probably will go with MkII Ruger Stainless

I’ll keep you posted :D
