I am a new gun owner. I recieved several antique guns from my Father, one of which is a beautiful, nickle plated, mother of pearl handle Colt Frontier Scout. Ser#7171k. What is the best way to determine the approx value? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Sign into an auction site like gunbroker.com, enter in "Colt Frontier Scout" and check through the Completed Auctions for any guns that resemble it in terms of condition, finish, and any other extras, like the original box, owners manual, etc. From the serial number your Scout was manufactured sometime between 1961 and 1962. The K series differed from the earlier Q series in that the frame was now being made out of Zamac, a zinc alloy composition, versus the aluminum alloy frame used in the original models.

In addition to bannockburn's comment The K series were assembled with smooth walnut stocks without medallions and though you will occassionally find some with medallions, pearlite and laminated stocks these are often aftermarket additionals and not factory original. Only a letter from Colt will tell you what your 1961 FS shipped with. The above information taken from "Scouts Peacemakers and New Frontiers" by Don Wilkerson. The best reference book for this Colt model revolver.
