Several years ago I was a government employee that responded to a suicide. I did as I was trained and performed CPR trying to save this person's life. In the months long investigation that followed, I was informed by state and federal agencies that if a trial followed (such as wrongful death, or even homicide) that my CPR may be used against me. It is very typical while performing CPR to crack or break rib bones. And the family or some interested third party may try to bring up broken ribs in court to prove a wrongful death claim. Long and vague story short is
If They want you bad enough, They will get you.

Fortunately for me, nothing came of the death. It was ruled a suicide. I did everything I could reasonably do. And the family has enough of their own legal troubles to muddy the court system with a death lawsuit.

Every time I have to get re certified in CPR we are told there is a Fed law that exempts you from doing harm by doing CPR for just that reason. That you can end up doing some damage. Hope they are not lying to us every couple years when they make us all re certify.

The Good Samaritan law will exempt you to a degree from criminal liability if you are acting as a private person. Being a government employee at any level (county/parish, state, federal) gives you less protection being a civil servant involved in a death. Civil suit is a whole nother can of vicious, venomous snakes.
