A recent poll in Norway shows that biathlon is the most popular sport with 52% of women.
Among men the number is 38%.

Now, if only they could start some spinn-off sports like running and shooting, rally with shooting stops, etc. :)

I believe they actually have some running biathalons in the states. I'm not sure how popular they are or who puts them on though.

RUN & SHOOT

I attended a few biatholons when my wife ( SGTMAJ ) was in the ARMY, stationed at Ft. Indiantown Gap...they would run x amount of miles then have to shoot their M16's at 50 and 100 yards. Good training...

I am a runner and a shooter and would love to compete if I just had some info on where these are held.

Running would be quite a bit tougher. On skis at least you have a smooth motion: running would bounce the rifle repeatedly against your shoulders and back.

I ski, and I shoot, but I don't think I'm up to the task of mixing the two :D

Most Biatholons...

don't require you run with the weapon...or at least the ones I've attended. Probably for safety reasons, the ARMY had their runners go to a station where the weapon had to loaded...fire a string...then run again to the finish line. I do understand that the USA has a team that skis and shoots...but I'm not sure if they have the run & shoot scenario. :scrutiny:

Kobun, sorry to see that the Norwegian team was disqualified for a safety violation. ..... The sport has changed , originally it was service rifle. But the sport has two very opposite objectives .The calm ,low pulse rate ,steady shooting contrasted with the high pulse rate .high breathing , great use of muscles.Makes it interesting ......Kobun OT, would you care to comment on the info that Norwegians are now the biggest consumers of pizza ????? Do they make it with herring ?

My unit did the run & shoot scenario are part of unit sports day once.

Run 2 miles to range in full battle gear minus body armor. Stop time.

Fire record qualification, add 15 seconds to run time for every missed shot.

Start time, run 2 miles back to start/finish point.

Great fun.

You might find some courses under "Summer Biathlon," on a search engine.

I've heard of courses where participants run and ones where they bike.
The rifles, or pistols, are left at a shooting station(s) and the competitors run or bike between them.

I am going to look for some of these I will post any I find. How cool, talk about adding some stress to a range session. How about a 10k with 3 different shooting stations that would be the ticket.

Mike

El Tejon: yes, you stop to shoot, but I was referring to the act of carrying the slung rifle between stations. Based off the information provided, that's a non-issue since the rifle isn't carried.

According to member M67, this is actually an old sport involving crossbows. One was suppose to ski and shoot their target while going downhill. Crossbows were replaced with flintlocks. Now we have smokeless. Old sports are worth watching and participating in. :)
