In my area bike paths are long and plenty. As they wind through the city limits, sometimes groups of individuals (who are not bikers or walkers) congregate on the pathways. Some of the wooded, concealed areas have been targets for crime. Mostly girls on roller blades and headsets who are totally tuned out from the surroundings. Anyway, I have my permit and was wondering, what would be a small, lightweight handgun for carrying inside a back pack?

S&W 642 loaded with some good .38Spc works great. About 1 pound loaded.

If you are an auto guy, KelTec does pretty well.

A Kel-Tec P32, P3AT, or one of the little S&W .38 revolvers should fit nicely in the pocket of a cycling jersey.

Wouldn't be any heavier than a small water bottle.

You can even get a clip for the Kel-Tecs, so you can carry them inside whatever article of clothing seems most convenient.

I'd agree with TallPine though, forget about carrying in a backpack. It would take too long to get to the gun should you need it. Carrying in a back pocket, or with something like a Smartcarry would probably be more convenient.
One of these: http://www.gunblast.com/Kangaroo.htm
might work too, if you're wearing a shirt that allows easy access to the gun.

Whatever pistol you decide on, a holster solution that might work for you is the Active Body Holster.

I used to see sales flyers for these when I worked in a bike shop. It is similar to a belly band but designed for althetic demands (sweat).

A fanny pack would work well for this application as well, and you could carry your patch kit in the outer pocket. If you wear baggy cycling shorts, a pocket holster might work too.

Good luck,

A Kel-Tec P11 or P3AT would work great as already recommended. As with any carry pistol, be sure to put several hundred rounds through it to know its potential "foibles". Especially with the Kel-Tec P3AT's. The size is great, but they have a definite track record of being problematic. The P-11 seem to be more reliable. Lots to read at KTOG.org, positive AND much negative on the P3AT.

I carry a Kel-Tec P-3AT for bicycling and walking. I have two of them and they have both been very reliable. A good grip is very important with the small Kel-Tecs. BTW, at least 75% of the negative posts about the P-3AT at KTOG were from the same person who just wouldn't shut up about it, over and over and over again. I recommended shooting lessons but he still insists it was the pistol, even here. :barf: Rick

I bike with a full-sized Glock in a fanny pack. Biking is one of the only times I will do so, as it really doesn't look out of place, especially since I got a blue fanny pack that matches my rear bike bag.
